It's been making rattling noises when the clutch pedal is out but tranny is in neutral. Today it started rattling loudly all the time with a pulse in the clutch pedal.

My question is how long do I have (all highway driving) till this explodes, creating a huge mess of my output shaft?

It won't tear up the output shaft, it'll mess up the transmission input shaft bearing retainer. In these cars, there is a collar that goes over the input shaft that the bearing slides back and forth on. This collar also serves as the retainer for the main big bearing for the input shaft. If the bearing gets torn up (hence pulsating in the pedal), then it can gouge up the collar that the bearing slides on. Since the bearing retainer is aluminum, it can get gouged up pretty easy by a torn up bearing rotating at engine speed.

Like I told you on the other forum, another concern is that it will tear up the throwout bearing release fork, but that's a cheap part so it's not a big deal. I don't know how much the throwout bearing retainer costs, because the guy I had do my clutch had a used one that was in excellent shape laying around. I think he charged me like 20 bucks for it. He gave me the choice of the used one or a new one, but he was going to have to go through the BMW dealer for a new one. The part just looks like it could possibly be an expensive part.

Be prepared, the clutch operation is only going to go downhill majorly from here.

Yea, I'm driving it around tomorrow but that's it. My friend is taking me back to school, and I'm selling my dell axim pda for really cheap to pay for the clutch kit.

then i'm installing it in 2 weeks when I have a 3 day weekend.

So, you are going to tackle the job yourself? Do you have the torx sockets you need? If not, then be sure you budget those into the cost of doing the job, because they aren't cheap. From what I have read, you need high quality ones because cheap ones will break. If the clutch has never been replaced before, then those bellhousing bolts will be in there extremely tight. The top two bellhousing bolts are the worst to get to. The guy that did my clutch spent 8 hours just trying to get the top two out since they were in there so tight and there is next to no room to get any leverage. He ended up unbolting the front subframe to drop the engine a few inches so he could get some better clearance.

Techinically, it isn't a difficult job, but these cars will make it hard because of the lack of space around the transmission.

Dude didn't you get that Axim like 5 minutes ago?
Yes. thats why I hate that I have to sell it, but I can live without the axim. I barely used it anyways. you want to buy it? $220 and its yours... perfect condition and it comes with everything.

I hear those top bolts are super hard to get to... we'll see what I have to do.

yeha, those top two torx are a pain in the arse!
you will need extensions the length of the tranny and a UJ right at the socket end.
Ive written all this out in my tranny swap how to, but one suggestion i will make here is to tilt the engine back. Two ways and i did both, use mini tow straps from front engine i-loop to each hood latch behind engine and pull the engine back. The other is stick a lever bar into a hole of the engine mount beam and tie that thing down.
Otherwise, the entire project is not that hard.

PDA's are worthless for the most part. I use my Toshiba e310 for my homework and stuff during the school year, but I think overall, PDA's are highly overrated. More about playing around than actually USING it....

Btw, you have 2 more days until your throwout bearing blows up.

Noisy throw out bearing... I think i drove on a noisy bearing for 8,000 miles. Probably more. It was shaking my foot pretty good.

There's not need to buy the expensive torx sockets. I broke a few extensions before the sockets i bought from pep boys. Good thing they were craftsmen. But yeah as xlibelle said you need many extensions.

I think the starter was the most enjoyable part of the job...

I'm not touching the starter.

I just put a piece of wood under my oil pan and jacked up the engine in the front.

worked well.
