Not sure if there is a term for it (Shaved door handles?), but its a keyless entry with actuators that pop the door open.

What happens when he gets a dead battery?
If its a BMW you can open the trunk and jump it. If its not, you can still open the trunk and craw through the front somehow. [:D]

Yes but you can jump the trunk light with jumper cables or a battery charger enough to get the doors unlocked! [hah]

My wife ran the battery down in our 750iL and I found instructions on the web for using the trunk lamp connectors to get just enough juice to open the locks so you could get in and get the hood opened, it worked! Of course there are other ways as well.

That's a good idea though. I dont know about E38 but I know the e34, you can pull up on the door handle, unlock with the key, and then it should open.

I'm really honestly surprised bmw doesnt have a better way to open the doors if the battery goes dead. Guess they just assume if you're buying a BMW you'll keep a fresh battery [|)]

There were other ways, I just did not know them at the time. It was an e32 and you can do the same by pulling out the door handle and turning the key backwards or something like that.
