after driving, my car (1998 328i) makes a clicking sound when the car is parked and engine is turned off. the noise starts from a rapid clicking sound and then gradually slows down and stops after about a minute. does anybody have a clue where the noise is comming from? if so, do you know what the problem is and how to fix it? thanks!

That's just the exhaust pipe metal expanding and contracting due to the heat, it eventually goes away after the car cools off. Relax, all BMW's do that it's characteristic of them to comfortably tick away the heat while basking in the warm sun. Kind of like sweating, only car style.

Yep - it's normal. The way BMW wraps heat shields around the catalytic convertor causes the ticking sound as the two layers of metal contract at different rates while cooling. Most cars do it to some extent, but BMWs tend to do it more than other cars because of the heat shielding design.
