I got in my first accident today. It had rained earlier today and although the roads were damp traffic was moving at the speed limit. I took a curve at around 30 mph (posted limit: 35) and when I came around the other side saw that the car in front of me had fishtailed into the other lane (looked like a really mediocre drift) and was almost broadsided by an SUV. Seeing this happen right in front of me I hit the brakes and managed to hit a small patch of oil (only visible when I exited the car after the fact) that was also the cause for the car in front of me's fishtail.
He managed to correct himself but I must have overcorrected because I completely curbed the car. The curbs on this street are different then most, they are easily 6-7 inches tall and the tops of them are very rigid. One of my wheels also hit a steel sewer. I ran off the road and came about 1 foot from hitting a telephone pole, but managed to nail one of those yellow rods that they use to hold the wires in the ground.
Visible Damage:
A giant indentation in my front bumper from hitting the yellow rod
Three flat tires, all but my passenger side back
A ruined rim, passenger side front
All I can say is thank god I didn't get hurt, hit the telephone pole, hit the car in front of me, etc. I also bought a coverage plan when I got these new tires a few months ago so I won't have to pay as much to get them replaced. Thankfully I was also driving my Saab (first accident ever in that thing). I think I might have cried had this damage been done to my Bimmer.
Be careful out there guys!
