Read this link. Sure a car that requires 91 octane will run ok on lesser octane ratings because the computer will adjust your performance to adjust. Over time you will suffer damage. I mean is the $2.00 per tank worth the risk?

Plus that's only newer vehicles. A car like the E30 M3 requires 91 or higher, and doesn't have active knock sensors. You'll ruin the engine running 87 or 89 and revving it high.
I think we get a new thread arguing the AKI of gas every other week. It's such a simple topic (aka highschool chemistry)...I don't know what the big fuss is.

I use jet fuel, but you have to when your compression is as high as 10.5:1 [rofl][rofl]

You must have a diesel engine in your 5er - jet fuel (JET A) is essentially kerosene!

Actually, you really meant AVGAS 101LL - 101 Octane Low Lead, used in reciprocating aviation engines.

You know all that alcohol put into those high octane gasolines are bad for your tank and motor and everything that is in the fuel system. Alcohol is very carrosive (one of the reasons why drag cars engines are replaced)

Reason why BMW requires Premium is because again remember people that Octane is the the resistance of gasoline to ignite, in esence knock is made from the engine burning the gasoline before it is supposed too (marble sound) and with a high compression there is more heat since more air is compressed so that is why you need a higher octane gasoline. Even if the computer does do its magic (which it does very well) I don't suggest anyone using less than the required, companies put alot of money into their gas research so trust me its not in vain.

Like my teacher says "you gotta pay to play".

If gas is a complaint you should get a different car meantime and use your BMW for weekends or something.

Just a suggestion

We get 91, 95, and 98 but only the 98 octane is worth a pinch of catshit here. All our other fuel is absolute crap, especially our Diesel fuel; the amount of sulphur in it is terrible.

Don't know what the standard of fuel is like in the US but I know Japan probably has the best.

One thing I know is that Chicago area fuel sucks donkey nuts. lol

Bet ya guys didn't know that gas stations are supposed to close when the truck is refilling the tanks because when they refill it the stuff that might be in the tanks swirls around and is pumped into your car. Supposed to close it for 30min.

Well so much for that schpeel

That must be a rule/law where you live, there is no such rule/law in Idaho, Washington or California. If the stations filters are cleaned and properly working it should make no difference. Ever notice at times when your pumping gas the meter is flowing very slowly, that is a sign of dirty and/or clogged filters.

Ooh yah, I dunno I just never fill up with a truck refilling. But now that I know why the damn thing that I was filling up with took like 2hrs to fill up was due to the filter lol instead of cheep BP pump machines. Its not a law I was just going by what gas stations used to do around my place. Still the gasoline quality is the crappers, cities with alot of cars in order to cut down on HC's and CO's oxidise the gasoline more than out of cities (rural). I notice this because when I went to Michigan I filled up at some old schmoe Phillips 66 (worst gas ever IMO) and my tank lasted longer on reg. 87 octane. Jep so much for fuel efficiency in the city. [:I] I also have to change my fuel filters every 30k miles or so (not always but usually), reason when I go to WOT she would drop a bit of RPM's and then start to go up, but when I replaced it, she was fine. I checked my tank and had taken it down and flushed it and put it back up and knew it wasn't that but yeah every now and then I have to change them, currently the filter is running for 38k, its a NAPPA one too, go figure [eek]
