Hi guys!!! Does anyone know the process of painting metal?

I sanded down my hood to bare metal. Now I'm afraid to do anything else.
My hood was really bad before, the paint was smudging everywhere.

So what are the steps??? I'm trying to get it done before winter starts. because if rain hits the bare metal, it WILL RUST... (I had to tape down the hood to prevent it from rusting).

Would someone help me??
the hood is now BARE metal. what do I do now?
I'm painting it black!

First you need some etching primer, which will bond to the metal, unlike other primers. I'm not sure if you need the other primer after that... If it's just the hood that you're painting, probably not. It's just important to have the same color primer everywhere so the paint on top of it comes out the same everywhere. After that you can paint it with the actual paint.

What are you using to paint with? Do you have an HVLP gun?

On a $50 budget, here's your best bet. Go to www.duplicolor.com and read everything you can, look at the videos, etc. They have specific info about the surface prep, primers, etc.

Clean and prep the metal as they suggest on thier web site - soap and water, then use their Wax and Grease remover.

Then I would suggest you paint in this order:

1. Premium Self-Etching Primer
2. Premium Primer Sealer
3. Color Coat

This should cost around $50 for a hood.
