DME and ECU

Whats the difference? IS the DME just the chip? And the ECU is the whole thing?

They are the same thing - both are the whole computer. ECU is a generic industry-wide term, and BMW referred to their ECU as DME (Digital Motor Electronics) when they first came out with them.

Well I have been told when the ICV goes out it burns the DME out, now, is this just the chip? or the whole thing? A new OEM ECU for a s14 is over a grand, god damnit

Are you sure about that? I don't know if the s14 is different, but the ICV on the M20s have a separate idle control computer. The DME doesn't control the ICV on the M20s. The idle control computer is a small little plastic box located under the dash near the ECU.

I pulled mine apart and theres no burn marks so yey i save $1100 lol

Im taking the intake pleneum off now to replace the ICV
