Diesel + Sports car do go together

Last week when I posted pics of the new Alpina E90 Diesel, a few people went on and on how Diesel and performance cannot go hand in hand. We won't say who these people are [:D] , but here is some proof that Diesel + Sports car do go together!!!

2006 Mercedes-Benz SL400 CDI Diesel and the SLK320 CDI Diesel:

SL400 has 311 hp and 539 lb-ft torque. This makes it's 0-60 time within less than a second difference of the SL600 V-12 and the SL55 AMG Kompressor.

The SLK320 CDI tri-turbo (yes it has 3 turbochargers) beats the 0-60 times of both the SL600 and the SL55.

Both also deliver a combined city/highway 37 MPG.

Looks like Diesel not only goes hand in hand with sports car performance, it might even be better [;)]

Technically diesel isn't near the top of its performance capabilities yet, where as gasoline engines pretty much are.
Elussive - It is illegal to sell new diesel cars I believe (or something shady like that). Plus our diesel fuel sucks.

That definitely sucks. I remember reading that article about the SLK320 CDI but I just thought it was exaggaration.

I wonder if it is the same experience to punch it in a performance diesel as compared to a performance gasoline engine.

Do diesels rev quickly? I mean what about those diesel cars with manual trannies....when you blip the throttle for aggressive downshifts, I bet it revs slowly, huh?

You guys think diesel is really our answer? Granted cars get way better economy on diesel fuel, I've read that the refining process to produce diesel fuel is not cost-effective at all.

damn thats really powerful.
I remember watching that Top Gear episode where Clarkson drove a 535D and it was keeping up just fine with the 545i in the wet.
Most diesels have like 5,000 rpm limits though, and I believe two or three states in the US do not recieve any diesels outside the US, like California.

OMG Adam that is truly astounding!!!! 539lb-ft is plainly ridiculous. We go by newton metres here in Aussie so i'm guessing that is in the region of 800NM. You could rip a house from its foundations with that kind of torque. Needless to say, in-gear acceleration should be stupendous as well.

Truly amazing.

But the point of a diesel isn't performance! I'm simply trying to say that the power output is to the point where the majority of people would probably accept it.

Diesels will very likely see their way into sports cars in the near future. In the September '05 issue of Hot Rod magazine, there is an article on the "Future of Diesls." Now keep in mind, all the vehicle in this article were trucks, Ford F-250s, 350s and such. One of their features is a 1995 F-350, 4x4, crew cab. This is large, heavy truck. He slid in a Cummins (Dodge) diesel making 1,000hp and 1,700ft-lb of torque. He is able to run 10.59s in the quarter.

The world's fastest pickup is a street-legal Dodge Dakota built by Sidewinder. It makes 700hp and 1,300lb-ft of torque and tan 217.31mph. On the entire length of the Hot Rod Power Tour it averaged 21mpg.

As soon as they make them cleaner running, I could see them becoming very common in Bimmers and many other sports cars, foreign and domestic.

The problem with diesels is they don't have near-immediate power which is needed around a REAL track. 1/4 mile gives it plenty of time to build the power, but when you're shifting every 3 or 4 seconds on average in a real race, the gas engines are still the top pick.

True, but look at the V10 in the M5. When V10s and even V12s were first introduced they were slower revving, much like diesels (but not as slow as diesels.) But over the years they have gotten quicker and stronger. Diesels are heading that way. The first diesels were used in big trucks (eighteen wheelers, big rigs, whatever) and redline around 3000rpm idling just under 400rpm. Even these have become quicker as they have become smaller. I'm not saying diesels will be in sports cars tomorrow, but in a few years...

Brandon is roght on the money, diesels were very slow revving in the past, but they have come a long way. My brother's F350 with a six speed can really move through the gears obtaining redline quick and smoothly!
