What's next - an olive oil Ferrari?

"Lamborghini could be on the verge of a revolutionary supercar step. The Italian firm is testing a diesel Gallardo, with power coming from the 5.0-litre 309bhp V10 VW engine. According to our sources, Lamborghini engineers are happy with the performance, especially the staggering 553lb ft of torque, but the problem lies with the power delivery, in part due to the narrow rev-range characteristics of a diesel engine.

Lamborghini is not the only company to look into an alternative fuel for a supercar. Toyota has a running prototype for a petrol-electric hybrid supercar, with a view to a launch in 2007."

Diesel does not combust and expand as rapidly as gasoline. Therefore, the pistons won't move as fast as a gasoline engine on the power stroke, therby limiting the rpm.

Okay, what diesel engine in cars, SUV's, and pickups are NOT turbocharged nowadays? Turbocharger in a diesel is like a given....
Says who. There are diesel engines that don't have turbo's.

bmw046series - Why does fuel efficiency in a Lamborghini matter???? I HIGHLY doubt thats a consideration for them. Unless its getting 5 miles per gallon... I think they dont really care since they are a performance car company (well, do they still make tractors?) The fact its a diesel doesnt make it any less of a sports car... its STILL a lamborghini and they are trying to move to diesel like the rest of the world. Too bad our diesels in the US are of shitty quality... which is why we aren't getting much.

It was a joke the Gallardo gets 10 MPG anyways, what does it matter in a $180,000 car; it will cost you about $15,000 a year for maintenance. If you can’t afford to fill it don't buy it - just like those other idiots with their ESCALADES! Bling Bling my @$$.

In many parts of the world diesel fuel is the end all be all when it comes to fuel, so thats all they sell for cars in those parts of the world.

Mercedes has the new E320d. True, if our diesel was much better, we would see alot more of them around. I would consider a super exotic car that can give me great performance for 20mpg....if i had the money. So you loose a little oomph!, but you get to take it out more often.
