You're right about it being a product placement deal, except that it generally is not free. Actually, the VENDORS usually PAY to have their vehicles, computers, etc. placed in movies, either by bidding for the placement, or negotiating a long term placement deal. The director has very little to say regarding product placements, unless he is funding the film. Product placements are big $$$$ ($10,000 - $100,000s depending on exposure!)
My brother in law is a producer and does this negotiation all the time. A few years ago we went to LA to visit him for a week, he told me not to rent a car. He showed up at LAX in a new GM Yukon and said it was mine for the week! He explained that he had a multiyear deal with GM for truck placement in his movies, and has "descretionary" loaners available, told them he needed it for a visiting VIP!
