New to BMW. Will be buying a 2000 528i manual shift in June from my wife's sister. Too good a deal to pass up (approx. trade-in purchase). Yesterday, I posted my first inquiry in the 5-series forum. Most questions answered.

The BMW's are only 2 wheel rear drive. So what exactly could DSC do? Seems to me the AST All Season Traction would be wheel power/acceleration control (like my Volvo sport vs. winter vs. normal mode); and that the DSC would have something to do with the suspension/handling? I'm just not clear on the difference DSC vs. AST.

Thanks-

DSC stands for Dynamic Stability Control and it basically prevents driver's from binning their BMWs into the nearest hedge. When the car's sensors detect slip (either understeer or oversteer) it will apply the brakes to individual sliding wheels and/or restrict engine revs. Basically, DSC will not allow you to spin off the road...within reason, of course [hihi]

ASC+T, on the other hand only prevents wheelspin in acceleration situations, ie: it only stops the driven wheels form doing burnouts, which is a shame [hihi]

Hope that helps.

No you were also very helpful. I just was still uncertain b/c I realized the car I'm buying has both DSC and AST. I decided to post request for more detail (it's the engineer in me) in this forum b/c it seems these features are in many of the models. This is all b/c I'm new to bmw and in scramble mode to learn as much as possible about my wife's sister's car we're getting sometime in June. I had no idea we were buying a replacement for my still running 93 Volvo 850GLT now but we can't pass up the deal.

Thanks.
