Hey everyone--
Kinda curious. why no discussion/pix/thoughts/etc on BMW convertibles? Haven't read about any on this board. I just purchased a 2002 325cic, and I can't imagine having a roof over my head on this incredible machine. Any ragtops out there? In Florida??

Oh yeah, we're here! I have two, a '99 323 and a '04 330 (hardtop installed on the 330 below). Do you have any pix to post? And I know of at least one in Florida that checks in here on occasion.

Everybody with a drop top - check in!!!

Thanks Kirby, but as you see, not much interest. I am amazed! My ragtop is an incredible driving experience, even in the hot weather here in South Florida. Let's see if we can continue the action and get something started.

I personally don't like covertibles, but I know many many people who love convertibles.
I can't stand the wind noise, and high speeds in a convertible scares me.
And I don't feel safe in a car without a roof!

But that's me....

Aw Kenny when I put my hardtop on it is sooo quite and comfy, come ride with me!
Haha...yeah, with a hardtop, then maybe...I gotta check it out!

I was testing a Z4 3.0i once and did like over 100mph (can't remember exactly, 110mph maybe?) over a long bridge, I was scared shit with the wind rushing all over me! I immediately slowed down. I stopped to try to put the top up, but didn't know how (haha) so that ruined the rest of my test drive! I guess I'm used to quiet cars, having driven 2 540i's with almost no windnoise.

I don't mind the convertible hardtops however, like the ones in MB and BMW is only now catching up with them.

kenny, am i safe to assume you don't like hogs?
Jae, You mean Harleys? You're right, I don't fancy them.
However, when I was younger, I used to ride dirtbikes and do quite a lot of autocrossing/scrambling on natural tracks. But then you don't really get up to high speeds in dirtbikes, just heights and skids, and LOTS of shaking your bones up!

I've had several crashes on motorcycles before when I was young, and survived.
So I don't really want to get on one now when my bones are not as young anymore!

I understand, speed in a drop top takes some getting use to. Having instructed at CCA drivers schools I have had the thrill of doing over 140 in a topless car. It is really a weird feeling with all that wind and noise. A really good friend of mine had a 540 and we tracked it once, I asked him, "are you going to just do 50 around the track all day or show me something?" He was going in excess of 100!

Yeah, the 540's are so smooth and quiet that it's easy to get carried away.
I still remember times when the car is stopped or parked, I had to pause to listen if the engine was running or not. Then times on the highway, unaware, I look down at the speedo, and Whoops! Many times I had to ease the foot quickly coz' I wasn't aware of the speed.

That's another topic for discussion, I hardly listen to music when I drive.
Usually only when I'm stuck in traffic, or parked waiting for someone.
I like the quiet so I can pick up any warning signs from the engine, or any other mechanical parts on the car, rattles, etc. That's the only way you find out that something is wrong with the car, before something gets really bad. With the music on loud all the time, it's easy to overlook little tell tale sounds here and there.

Well, of course, if I am driving on a long trip, like several hours, I would like to listen to the radio. But now that I got the Carrera, the engine is my sound system, there's really no better sound effects than to hear the German horses roar behind you!

I'm the same way too - I like to hear my engine/car noises when I'm driving so I usually don't listen to the radio. I doesn't roar like the Carrera but its music to me, plus I've discovered some problems with my car from the noises I never knew were there until I turned off the radio.

The wind deflector is key to reducing wind noise when driving at high speeds with the top down. That's why I like those convertibles that come standard with a glass wind reflector, such as the Lexus SC430, Honda S2000, Audi TT Roadster, among other cars.
