SUPERIOR, Neb. -- The showroom at Alexander Motors Inc. here is so small that it can hold only one vehicle. For the past three months that's been a bright red 2004 Chevrolet SSR.

Problem is, dealer Rick Alexander didn't want the $42,245 roadster pickup. And he hasn't found a buyer.

He is not alone. This year, SSR sales through November totaled 8,538 units. That's far below General Motors' original annual U.S. sales target of 13,000 units.

The automaker's backlog of unsold SSRs is even more telling. As of Dec. 1, GM had 7,400 unsold units, for a 301-day supply. Automakers generally aim for a 60-day supply.
.....

Alexander has tried to sell both SSRs on the online auction site eBay, with no luck. He thinks the 2005 model will be easier to sell because it has the more powerful 390-hp V-8, which has 90 hp more than the 2004 version.
.....

The SSR was supposed to be a halo vehicle to generate excitement - and sales - for Chevrolet's other nameplates.

A market study by Foresight Research of Rochester, Mich., predicted that hubbub over the SSR would generate an additional 22,000 sales of Silverado pickups. Several companies paid for that study. One of those companies was ASC Inc. of Southgate, Mich., which builds the SSR for GM.

Maybe it generates excitement, but not sales. It takes balls to drive a car that is so outrageously-styled like this SSR. Oh yeah, and what the hell is it? It's not a good roadster, it's not a good pickup truck....exactly what is it good at? Nobody wants to shell out $42K MSRP for something that is jack of a few trades (if that), and master of none.

I don't understand how these automakers have "unexpected sales". It's a pretty safe prediction to say that cars like the Phaeton and the SSR just aren't going to sell....

Excitement is too generous a word. Me and my coworkers carpool to work. Since I'm the resident car guru, they asked me what that hideous piece of machinery the Chevy dealership had perched on a platform. I said it was the SSR. They asked what it was and how much it was. I said it was a pickup with a folding hardtop that cost $40,000. They all responded with various forms of "who in their right mind would buy such a hideous beast." And these are people who are not averse to buying American cars. And yes, this poor Chevy dealership has at least 2 of those things, and they've been there for at least the month I've been working here cuz I see them every single day.

I've never seen one on the road. The only place I've ever seen them is at the dealerships!

I've looked at them - it's not a very exciting vehicle. It has that "retro" look, but there just isn't any excitement to it. The interior is kinda dull and boring and is very cramped. The back end is big and bulky. Just another example of how GM can produce a concept vehicle that generates alot of excitement and buzz but then takes all of the cool stuff out of it when sending it to production.

It's way overpriced for a non-sporty vehicle that you can't do anything with except cruise around town in. If I was going to spend $44,000 on a truck, you'd better believe that I'd be buying a 4x4 Silverado 2500 HD crew cab with the 8.1 liter big block, 6 speed ZF manual transmission, and leather. And I'd save myself $6000!!

I guess I thought it would be more popular, not because I like it, but because I thought there could be enough hard-core Chevy people to support the piece of crap.

Chevy seems to be having a real difficult time getting their customers to buy, I have noticed 05 Suburbans going for 8,000.00-10,000.00 below sticker.

This is not a Chevy attack; they are not the only domestic having trouble.

I'm a hardcore Chevy guy, and I would never buy an SSR. In fact, if I was in the market for a new vehicle, I wouldn't buy any Chevy currently being produced except the Corvette or a Chevy pickup (full size, not a Colorado). The new Malibu isn't a bad car, but I just don't find it to be all that exciting (the old one was an embarrasment). The Aveo is an embarrassment - I don't think I've ever encountered such a cheap feeling car - it's not worth half its asking price. The new Cobalt is supposed to be a well-built car, but it's still a tiny, cheap (although, not inexpensive) car, and the supercharged "SS" version (horribly horrible that they are tacking the SS badge onto a Cobalt) comes riced out with a giant wing from the factory. The Impala is ok - my parents have a fully loaded one. It's a nice car with lots of equipment for the price, but its handling is a bit soft for my taste, and the Supercharged SS is too pricey for an Impala. I was excited when I heard that the Impala redesign was likely going to be a rear-drive platform again with the return of V8 power, but now the rumors are saying it will continue to be a front drive V6. [?|] It really is a sad state of affairs for Chevy when someone who is as big of a Chevy guy as I am feels like I wouldn't buy a new Chevy car.

So many American cars are disapointing. I have thought about getting a Pontiac Grand Prix a few times and this car would really be a perfect car for my work and general needs. Unfortunately, the car is just not built very well from what I read. The same is true of far too many American cars. It's not like they need to compete with BMW's and similar cars, but they should offer a bit more safety and quality IMO.

I would rather have a better quality, full-price $30k American vehicle than be able to chop 5k off the sticker at the time of purchase on the crap being built now.

Another POS i think is the Crossfire......I freaking hate that car......however, I raced a German one about a month ago and had my ass handed to me....all nice and wrapped up and everything. It was embarrassing.........I am glad there was no one else around. They have AMAZING pickup. Was doing about 130mph, when I passed him and before I knew it he was right on my ass, switched lanes and smoked me. SAD SAD SAD day for the Bangle Mobile.

I guess the 330HP in a smaller car is hard to beat with 225 in yours. This sucks. I'm just wondering how long before Hyundai has faster cars under $30.

Was it the 330hp SRT-6 model or the 215hp standard model? Both Crossfires have a weight advantage over the 5er but based on your description, it sounds like you were up against the SRT-6. The SRT-6's engine actually comes straight from the previous C32 AMG.
