I'm about 10 months away from getting a new car. I currently drive a 330xi but want a larger performance sedan. I would like to know which magazine does the best job of objectively evaluating the competing sedans and is the most reliable in its recommendations.

remember once you go to a 5 u can't go back to a 3, at least thats what my dad said, he had a 525i, then got a 3, hated it, said once you go to a higher number you cant go back down, well long story short he now has a 760Li
You can if you can't afford the higher one. [?|]

When my friend bought his 330ci, the dealer gave him a 525iT station wagon while the 330 was being delivered. Both of us loved that station wagon, and both of our cars were faster too.

You are going to be your best critic.........Test drive cars until you fall in love with one.....I LOVE my 530i and I LOVE the new A6 3.0.. AWSOME CARS, but the Audi IMO is not as performance oriented as my Bimmer...so I will stick with what I have.

Car and Driver and European Car are the best IMHO. No matter what people say Car and Driver does some GREAT comparison tests. They love BMW to death but are not afraid to say when something on a Bimmer is not right, no matter how many ads they have. And to be perfectly honest I have never seen any magazines saturated with Bimmer ads and the mags still love them...........

I agree, get a 5er for sure. Since you already have a 330xi, I would tryt to get a 540i if I could.
Yep id definitly go with a e39 540i sports package, the car is beautiful and it pulls. 0 - 60 in 5.5 seconds thats almost M speeds there. Or... if you can afford it go all out with a M5 you can get a used one from 2002 or 2003 for around 50-60k these days.

I like Car & Driver. You just have to get a reference for where the editors are coming from. I've test driven many of the cars they wrote about that I was interested in. From my point of view, they generally don't say anything bad about any car (I think to avoid pissing off the car companies so they keep getting test samples of the hottest models). If they do, it's a real bad flaw. You look for places in the article where they don't praise a feature or wish it could be better. Then, downgrade that feature by 10 fold. For example, if they say the controls are not quite as user friendly as a Honda but quite acceptable, that means the layout was designed by a moron (literally) and one or two functions in particular necesitates taking that particular engineer out and shooting him for the greater good of the world.

Go and test drive! lol, mags aren't the real deal...

If you want BMW - I like the 5 series ('03 or '04)

If you want Mercedes (since you already have a BMW) - E~series!!!!!!
