Let's say you just been charged with launching the new X5 4.8is. How would you go about getting the word out? How would you communicate to the world about the incredible power, performance, and agility of this awesome vehicle? So. . .any big thinkers out there?[:D]

Set up a series of 'test drives' in major cities around the US. It would be more successful if they are NOT at a BMW dealer so that people don't feel like they are being pressured to buy the car, just show up for a drive. Set them up at places like mall parking lots with a tractor trailer information center.
Theres my idea.

Well first I'd probably advertise it on television and talk about it's incredible performance specs and it's 4.8 liter engine. Then I'd probably hire Adriana Lima to pose in front of it... of course for everyone's benefit.

In case you don't know who she is...

[Quite possibly the greatest idea ever. ]

...though not the most original. Isn't it the golden rule of marketing?

Of course the other major way to get publicity would be to leak a media report that there are MAJOR design flaws and safety hazards with the X5, then refute them vigourously on the front page of every major newspaper.

I see where you are coming from but the class of the car comes into play. How often do you see a BMW, MB and so on with this type or advertising? It is probably better suited for a Chevy, Dodge, or Mitsubishi target markets.

The X5 4.8is is nice and all, but it is not all that different from its predecessor, the X5 4.6is.

I don't think it is going to be big news, given that the Cayenne Turbo still has more power (albeit in an ugly design) and the X5 platform is due for a redesign, not to mention the big SAV news for BMW is the launch of the X3.

So, I don't know if there is anything that really needs to be announced.

Autoreviews, this is your second post in regard to the X5 and it's marketing. Why may I ask is this so important to you?

I was thinking that perhaps he/she was working on an academic marketing paper and chose the X5. If this is the case, or whatever the case is, just say it!

I was thinking academic because any actual firm or company has access to a tremendous amount of promotional formats, market studies and demographics information. In addition, this board is too small and perhaps too bias for a truly representative study.

Definitely smacks of a marketing perspective.

It also seems apparent that autoreviews is not all that knowledgeable about BMWs, since the X5 4.8is is not exactly a milestone in BMW product development. Sure it has incredible power, performance and agility for a truck, but so did the 4.6is and, for that matter, so do all of the X5s. (I recently drove an X5 3.0i Sport and was very impressed. I almost bought it, but it was just a little too much $$).

Good point brahtw8. It is not even a new product introduction, just an enhancement. I would think that there would be no new significant marketing implications, it would follow the same plan as the other X5's.

autoreviews, if you are working on a product introduction scenario let us know. There are some people here that can probably help [wave]

Here's an idea... Get a bunch of interns (aka cheap labor) to post a question on as many auto related websites, asking for feedback on the launch strategy. Naturally, many will be drawn into researching the vehicle and heated debates will ensue as opinions are posted.

I never thought about that. That is a great idea if you think about it. It may also say something about where people are getting their information.

Wow. . .its like deep thoughts by Jack Handy for some. No paper. No intern. Just a simple guy who finds automotive advertising interesting. Exotic lingerie models for BMW? Probably not the best fit.

brahtw8 your right, the 4.8is isn't the biggest news from BMW. But it is nonetheless important considering its at the end of its product cycle in an extremely crowded segment.
