Motor Trend Magazine has named the new Cadillac CTS its 2008 car of the year, saying it is proof that Detroit can build a world-class sedan. The award, to be announced Tuesday, is significant because it shows the world that Detroit is back in the car business after years of focusing on sport utility vehicles and trucks, said magazine Editor-in-Chief Angus MacKenzie.
The car's appearance, fit and finish, quality of materials and performance rival that of its German and Japanese competitors, MacKenzie said.
"There's really not a lot of difference at all between BMW, Mercedes and Cadillac," he said in an interview Monday.

It feels cheaper, but it is a nice cadillac. I mean, compared to the Catera and Caddie's recent crap, the CTS is a gem of a car.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that *there is no* difference. While all probably have the same statistics and can score pretty similar numbers on a track, I think there is an air of quality missing from the CTS.

Even if that was true (which it isn't) they should be asking themselves
why most people who like fine automobiles would place Cadillac at the
rear of the pack.

Their user base (old people) is shrinking (dying).

I was optimistic when I saw the "new" STS in about 1991 or so, but they
subsequently never gained momentum (in designs, etc), especially in the
other bloated boats/models in the line.

Cadillac? Never heard of them.
Nobody drives caddy's any more. You might be able to see one if you can see past all the BMW's, Audi's, Mercedes', G35's and 350z's, Vettes, Porsches, and SUVs around here.... Cadillac is virtually non-existant in my area (province). There are a couple old guys in the city that have caddys... mostly they're in the way.
Do you think that other american manufacturers might take notice of this car though and try to raise the bar when it comes to handling and overall performance? Maybe dig themselves out of the stone age a bit?
