"While both the S4 and the CTS-V have unique appeal, the clear winner among these three is the BMW M3. It is all the fun of the CTS-V with all the quality of the S4 and a heaping helping of refinement to top it all off. The M3 is the one that we'd own if we had the means.
"
CTS-V isn't really in the class w/ the likes of the M3 and the S4. it's too big. even the regular CTS belongs in the class w/ the bigger sedans like the 5er and the A6. but since they're price competitors, such comparisons are made.
i was just at the dealership today, and they had a topless jet black m3 sitting in the show room. almost made me want to ask for trade in value for my car.. almost.. (course i'd get the imola
"The lighter BMW managed a winning 12.8 mpg, but that could be because it got a bit raucous at high rpm, so we operated the engine more slowly overall than the other cars'."
That makes no sense, that engine was made to operate at higher RPM's. DOH!! Stupid reporters.
Their whole statement makes no sense. The M3 is rated at 16/24mpg, I find it hard to believe that they only managed to get 12.8mpg from street driving. My car is rated at 20/29mpg and even with all my hard acceleration, I still manage to get a solid 18-19mpg. It is really hard to make cars have bad gas mileage nowadays with all their fuel/engine management systems, variable valve timing, etc.
I'm sure most of us agree that the M3 outperforms the others. I think it looks the best. The Audi's are fun to drive but are too plain looking and the Cadillacs are ugly. I can't stand their faceted bodies.

Trust me, if you drive normally the M3 can get roughly 16/24 - 18-26, but if you put your foot into it constantly I can see where it would get 12.8 mpg. These cars love petrol. It hurts every time I have to go the pumps. On a full tank of gas, driving cautiously, you cannot get 300 miles out of a tank full.
They must have been stomping the gas to get that bad of gas mileage.
Yeah, but that's exactly what makes no sense to me. It's pretty hard to get THAT bad gas mileage on the street. I have a feeling they reported 'testing' and 'driving' mileage together or something, which is just wrong. These car magazines always try to produce the worst gas mileage ratings they can, which is straight up stupid. Either way, gas mileage should definitely not be a priority for sports car shoppers.
I'm still debating which one I'd take, believe it or not. The M3 is certainly an amazing car, but in this comparison, it is a victim of its age and I'm biased towards Quattro AWD. Based on what I've just said, you'd think I'd go with the Audi S4 but I'm just not sure....
I wonder if BMW will get with it, and make an AWD version of the new E90 M3/M4 (Whatever it is, I still continue to hear conflicting stories from supposedly 'true' sources about the 3/4 series deal).
That, would be interesting.. An M with 400HP, and AWD?
That would be interesting, but the thing is, BMW has a set of "requirements" for it to be an "M car". It has to meet certain acceleration, handling, and braking requirements, among other things, but the first thing it has to be is RWD. This is why the X5 4.8is is an X5 4.8is and not an "M X5", which is what BMW originally wanted it to be.

its because you have this thing for awd cars, emile.. and what better awd system than the quatro? i remember you loving the 330xi set up.. putting on fat summers, etc.. coming from driving one for years, i'm just not a big fan of awds right now. people thing it'll magically make their car awesome in the winter, but you need the awd+ snow tire combo for that.. wish the S4 were few hundered pounds lighter. then it would be an even sweeter ride that i could spring for..
i love the fact that S4 doesn't stick out like a cop magnet. some may call it boring, but i think it's classy. but it def isn't an m3.

Yeah, you're right. The 330xi was great and I had a list of minor things I wanted to do, but the cost of those mods just exceeded their worth. And yeah, I definitely love the Quattro AWD. Not AWD in general because all AWD systems are different, but I think I share Audi's obsession with Quattro AWD.
