Broken hood release cable

1987 535is - hood release cable snapped and am unable top open. Does anyone have any idea how to release hood sop that it can be unlatched and opened?

If it broke at or near the handle, disassemble and pull it with a pair of pliers. If it broke under the hood, I have no clue what to do...
