I was running AutoX today. At the end of the first run I thought I smelled antifreeze, but another car had blown a hose, so I figured that was it. At the end of my second run I REALLY smelled antifreeze, and I knew something was up. By the time I got back to the starting grid, a small plume of steam was rising from under the hood. Racing's done for today, I told myself.
The upper radiator neck cracked, surprise surprise. I know that this is common on bimmers, and all plastic tank radiators in general. 100k - 125K miles and the plastic is tired from heat cycling. I had thought about probably replacing it this summer, but it didn't want to wait. While it's apart, I'll do all the hoses, thermostat and water pump, then it will be good for another 100K.
Unfortunately, my daughter always wants me to run first, so she didn't get any runs in at all.
