I was driving down in Brooklyn yesterday, when i began to normally and casually break i heard and felt a scraping noise in the pedals, I pulled over to a gas station to see if anything is stuck ontho the brake disks or anything but i havent seen nothing, my father belives that we just need new brakes... But when I took the Land Rover down to the dealer service, ouch... I belive 2 of the wheels need new "Spheres" which i have no clue what they are, and new brakes.. 1500 bucks or more... Land rover charges 100 bucks an hour for work, this is gonna make a big hole in my wallet...

By "spheres" I take it you mean rotors? You do not need to take it to Land Rover for brakes, do them yourself or take them to an independant shop. Purchase the rotors from an aftermarket supplier and you can also save big. Be sure you get the same or better quality, but 1500 for brakes is a crime!

I take it that your vehicle isn't under warranty right ? If so take it down to a local shop. Ask your friends or co-workers to recommend a good shop. Dealers normally charge 110% mark-up on parts combined with high labor . When your brake pads are getting low they make a small noise to let the driver know its time to change your pads and check your " spheres " .

a local shop will etch or turn your rotors to give a smooth and uniform surface and replace your pads

a dealer will replace your pads and rotors and say you need to rebuild your calipers . Thats the difference of a $1500 job vs. $300 job.

I don't think it's even supposed to get to the point where it makes a noise, you're supposed to take care of your car, not let it get to the point where you're riding on the calipers.

yup, take it to a local brake shop and get at least a second opinion. estimates are free right? but if you are at a point where the rotors are warped, didn't you notice the car not braking well? (jumping to a conclusion here of course ^^;;)

Militant-Grunt,

Unless your still under warranty... or enjoy throwing cash away... QUIT calling the damn Land Rover dealer! Get a quote at a respectable "shop". Also, as BigDaddy stated earlier... this is a job you most likely could do yourself for CHEAP with better then stock parts! [;)]

Can't you do your own maintenance? Hell will freeze over before I give $1,100 for a brake change, I do my own maintenance even though it isn't legal where I live. If you do it yourself, you'll probably save at least $700, it isn't that complicated all you need to do is buy books on how it's built (which arent cheap).
