Last night I turned on a road that was supposed to be closed for repairs, but someone had moved the construction gate. When I turned right onto the road a truck followed me so I assumed I must be correct that this road is now open.......well hells bells, it wasnt.....it had rained badly during the day so the ruts were very deep, the other side of the road was dug out about four feet so I couldnt turn around and this truck was behind me too, I thought it best to straddle the ruts so I wouldnt slide down the incline....so I kept on going......the ruts got too deep for me to get out of them so the bottom was dragging and got stuck twice with me gunning it to keep going........loud dragging sounds, traction light continually on.......I found a drive way to an abandoned business and turned around.....so did the truck......then I'm scared.....I motioned for him to talk to me because at this point, either my car was going to be dead or me.....what a choice.......he was a good guy (whew) and said he would make new ruts and for me to follow his new tracks.........so I did..........my car looked like I had been 4-wheeling, mud up on the hood, the windows were covered in mud, it was everywhere.......now there is a grinding noise coming from the back when I turn right or left......no sound as long as I am driving straight........is there anything that could of been damaged underneath.....thought it was all sealed up.....needless to say the wheel casings were inundated with mud...........should of bought me a pickup..........I think.......

I have an appt with the dealership Thursday for the seat.........will they be able to tell that I did very badly in dragging the bottom?

The grinding noise when turning is most likely some dirt, grit or gravel stuck in your brake rotors. I would take the car somewhere where they have an undercarriage washer, we had a small car wash that had one, when you drive in these jets squirt off the undercarriage of your car, then have it inspected. There could be damage to the engine pan, differential, or other componets. Keep an eye on your gauges, check your oil then get her somewhere to have her inspected.

Thanks Big Daddy, I'll do that in the morning and then take it to this car repair place by my house......he's the same guy that inspected the car when the Diet Coke 2-liter got stuck up in my wheel casing.........since he already thinks I'm a ditz with a great car, he shouldnt be surprised by this.....no point in getting someone new thinking the same thing......[paranoid]

I agree that the problem could very well just be a lot of dirt but I would want more than a car wash undercarriage wash. Put on your overalls and get under the car with the garden hose and a power nozzle, and spray the hell out of every nook and cranny untill the runoff is completely clear. If it still makes the noise......[B)]

sigh, it seems that all the girls i know would rather gun it and push the needle towards destruction, than to back out and go about things in a different way!
My ex rolled her car over a wild boar (see "why you should carry a cannon" thread and compare size of bear to hog) and that car has never been the same

take each wheel off and you will have easy access to your noise makers to clean it out.

I'm not picky, I'm choosy........where are the men who know who they are without so much baggage and insecurities....stand up, take control, hell its a man's world.......and dont forget your manners.......that's really missing these days, men not knowing what to do and confused on the word "independence."

And I'm sure they wouldn't mind not being kept for too long!

Some overstay their welcome, some think one night is long enough to wait (pulease)........learn to be a pace car, you dont have to win the race in the first couple of laps.

Now that is funny, Cosmos!!!!![]

I did not intend for the undercarriage wash to be the extent of things, just enough to get it to a shop on a rack and inspected. I am sure that she would than have her mechanic take the proper action considering what he saw. I was giving MyHarley some credit, ok?

Yep! I agree with the idea of crap getting caught underneath. Now with your "resources" I'm relative sure that this could be alleviated without the need of ruining your overalls!

Personally, I'd be one to offer, but you'd have to come to Phoenix first! [unsure]

Not that you asked, but here's what I would do if I were a yummy blonde (OK, blonde highlights). As Big Daddy, suggested I'd take it to a car wash get as much dirt off as possible. Then I would take it to the garage were Billy-Bob can put it on a lift and have a good look at my bottom. Then I would have him check out the underside of my car and see if anything is bent / broken. Providing it's just dirt packed in where it ought not be, I'd dig out my tinyest bikini, and while twirling it around my finger, ask Billy-Bob, if maybe he could help me wash my car (naturally it's way to cold to wear it, but he's not thinking that far ahead).

But seriously, it sounds like the differential may be damaged. A good dent could cause the spider gears to grind when you turn (you said the sound comes from the rear). When Bill-Bob has it on the lift, put the car in gear and give one of the rear wheels a spin. This will cause the other rear to turn the opposite direction and reveal if the differential is damaged. You could check this yourself by chocking the left rear tire and jacking the right wheel off the ground. Put the car in neutral, no parking brake set (hence the need for a wheel chock - be sure you're on a level surface), and turn the wheel by hand. if should turn easily and smoothly.

There's a reason Big Daddy is one of the head chiefs in charge.......you all have been watching too many "B" movies..........I did exactly as he said, undercarriage wash (actually did it twice), then to the mechanic down the street from my house.......I pulled in and he walked out and said, oh no not another Diet Coke bottle.......funny funny.......they worked for about two hours on it, took all the underneath covers and plates off...we had enough mud to fill a 3 gallon bucket.......checked all the fluids and test drove it twice.......he said I was very lucky, there is big scrape marks on the catalytic converter, all the fluid lines were intact and cleaned out big rocks from something about the drive train and brake rotors........he also said there was dried mud from previous times (shipyards are a bear on my car)..........all is well......then had it detailed, its shining and spotless, so I"m off for a drive, its sunny weather, about 60 degrees here in the great city of Houston...........

BTW, my mechanic said from now on, just put my car in the driveway with the hood up and he'll take that as a SOS sign.............[rofl] [rofl] [rofl] [rofl]

My charge was $45.00.........he said he has no doubt he will make money off of me sometime in the future............

MyHarley, I'm glad everything was okay. I guess from now on, you'll be thinking twice when the road in front of you even looks dirty, huh? [:p]
Although I don't blame you, that's exactly how I am. If the road looks too rugged, I don't take the risk.

Glad to hear it was nothing serious. Sounds like this local mechanic guy is a good friend for you. I love hearing about local shops that treat people well.

No bikini necessary...
