This is a similar comparison to Kirby's BMW vs Toyota cost of ownership thread.

Check this out:
Honda S2000 lease:
$35K MSRP
EPA of 20/26mpg
$0 down
10K miles per year
Taxes included
-$400/month

BMW Z4 3.0i lease:
$43K MSRP
EPA of 20/30mpg
$0 down
10K miles per year
Taxes included
-$500/month

I looked up Geico insurance quotes using myself as an example and filling out the exact same information and I received these quotes:
-$1,500 per 6 months for the Honda S2000.
-$1,000 per 6 months for the BMW Z4 3.0i.

Now let us compare maintenance for both vehicles:
-$100 per 6 months for the Honda S2000 (oil & filter changes, wipers).
-$0 per 6 months for the BMW under their free maintenance program.

YEARLY COST OF LEASING:
Honda S2000: ($1,500x2) + (100x2) + (400x12) = $8,000
BMW Z4 3.0i: ($1,000x2) + (0x2) + (500x12) = $8,000

Figure that the Honda's gas mileage is a bit worse than the BMW's but the Honda's maintenance estimate is rounded up, it is a pretty even comparison. I like how the BMW costs $8,000 more but when lesing, the yearly cost of ownership (or rent, to be technical), comes out to be the same.

And the answer is yes, I am planning on leasing a Z4 3.0i for 3 years, and then finance it to own it. [driving]

I just spoke with a salesman. The Z4 3.0i comes out to $550/month as I told him to roll registration, titling, and licensing into the lease so I don't have to pay any of those BS inception fees up front. I am dropping off $550 tomorrow (first month's payment) to order the car and it will come in around 6 weeks....when it comes, all I gotta do is sign the contract and drive off.

Sorry frolf, I'm not going for the si model as this is already pushing the envelope on monthly payments and I want the leatherette interior because it lasts longer - I'm gonna finance the whip after the lease is over and keep it until it dies.

Insurance is higher on the S2000 because it is listed as a sports car whereas the Z4 is listed a luxury roadster or something like that.

before you go for a lease, if you intend on driving the car 'till death do you part,' you should do this sort of financial comparison between a car loan and a lease rate.
Generally speaking, (especially with interest rates where they are) you are going to find that a straight financing of the vehicle will give you a better deal.
If you are unsure whether you will want the car in 3 years time, then your choice is fine.
I think it would be to your benefit to investigate interest rates, etc and do that calculation before committing even that $550 to get the car built / ordered.

good point Sean
wow, so you are gonna be driving a bimmer after all these years on the forum.. good to hear from ya Emile!

but if there is a plus on lease then purchase, you might be able to cert your car when you buy it back. (abit for a fee, but 3 additional years of warranty on cert used is better than aftermarket warranty extensions.)

I have to get out of the G35C lease. It makes no sense to have two RWD sporty cars.

Thanks for the advice guys, I will consider all my options regarding the financing. I like the lease then finance route because it will give me low monthly payments for 3 years and I will have enough money by then to take on financing the remaining value of the car. The downside of this method is that at the end of the lease, the "buyout value" of the car will probably be a few thousand more than it is actually woth on the used car market. But I figure that if I took good care of it and I know exactly where it's been and what it's been through, it will be worth it.

oh yea another plus on the lease:
if your ride happens to be plagued, you won't be stuck with a lame duck or stuck with the worry to having to shell out once its out of warranty. besides, who knows what'll happen in 3 years?
