A Jalopnik tipster says he's seen the super-skunkwerks-secret BMW "X6" crossover CUV/four-door "coupe." (Could it be be the car BMW's planning to unveil at the British International Motor Show in July?) He says, among other things, that the spec image of the X6 created by Auto Motor und Sport's artistes (above) is "somewhat of a close resemblance, but in a way doesn't even come close to what I saw." Still, if the following account doesn't sound exactly like what's been reported on the X6, we don't know what it could be. "The easiest way to describe it is that it's definitely based on the 5-series platform (with a newer, more aggressive looking fascia). Everything from the nose to the B-pillar looks pretty standard, but it's when you get past the C-pillar that it gets interesting. Basically it looks like a four-door 6-Series. It's not really a fastback/hatchback, and it's not really a station wagon. It's a 5-series with a sloped glass trunk (from the roofline down to the "tailgate"). Hard to describe but visually very different from anything I've ever seen from BMW... we were allowed to touch most of the controls, EXCEPT the shift lever, which is something I've never seen. It looks like the control stalk off of the 7-series, except that it was moved to the center console. It wasn't a traditional shifter in that the lever moved through the PRND positions, there were buttons for PNRD and you could manually change the gears by flipping the lever forward and back.

The I-Drive controller was in both the unnamed prototype and the X5, the unnamed prototype had a split sunroof (a la Nissan Maxima) and two different ways to open the trunk by either opening the entire hatch or flipping down just the part with the taillights. From the choice of comparison vehicles and a lot of questions about capacity, it seems like they are trying to position something above the 5-series wagon but sportier than an SUV."

"Its kind of like when you see something that's ugly and attractive at the same time, like Renee Zellweger. She has that weird smile/smirk, but I'd do her anyways."

We know exactly what he means.
