Guys a friend of mine just purchased a 2003 X5.

I took a look at it for him and found the following issues:

The paint work:

The paint on the hood didnt cover the edges (sides) it kind of runs over the edge just enough to cover the primer when the hood is closed. This same lack of finish was evident in the gaps where the doors meet the front fenders.

Finally in tiny spots the paint went from the body onto the black plastic/rubber trim

Now he says a BMW dealer told him thats how the car came out of the factory, can that be right? Have standards fallen that far?

no way - sounds like the car has been repaired

really sounds like the car had a front end collision and the hood and fender have been replaced/repaired

A couple of the ways to tell if a car has been wrecked is:
look for VIN numbers on the fenders - open the hood and look down the edge of the fender - this isn't foolproof as some manufacturers don't put them on the fenders and if the fender was repaired without replacement, then the vins could still be there
run your fingers around the edges of all body surfaces - if it's rough it's been repainted outside of the factory. Factory paint jobs will always have smooth edges and definitely no overspray
