According to Friedrich Eichiner, a BMW board member for corporate and brand development, BMW will decided by the end of the year whether or not it wants to sell engines and other components to rival automakers. When asked if he meant GM, Daimler and Fiat, Eichiner said: “We are talking with those companies you mentioned.”
Selling engines and other components to other automakers is part of CEO Norbert Reithofer’s Number One strategic plan to boost profitability. Selling engines to GM and Fiat, BMW will be able to increase revenue and reduce spending by spreading out the development and production cost over its engine and transmissions.
Until now, BMW had not confirmed that it is talking to GM, Daimler or Fiat. The German giant announced back in February that it is looking for customers for its engines and transmissions.

I think it will dilute the BMW name if they sell to anyone other than Daimler. Hopefully they see that.

Tom will have to add new forums here for GM models, and we'll have to deal with posts like "My CaMaRo is really a BMW cuz it has the same engine as your 335i." Or "What's the best blow off valve for my BMW twin turbo powered Chevy Cobalt SS?"

Bad Move. This will cheapen the BMW brand a lot, especially in regards to GM. I don't want BMW selling engines and trannies to any other company, but it would be different if it was an upscale, Euro brand....and not General Motors!

Remember BMW- pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered! Don't get money hungry!!

I think they should provide the engines for the Kia, Yugo and Tata brand cars. That would be extremely cool, for the cheap brands, total failure for BMW. I agree Adam, BMW keep it simple, European engines for European cars!

BAAAAADDD MOVE!!!!!! WTF!!! Come on BMW! Not only will it dilute the brand name, but will BMW start making engines that are not up to BMW's own standards? You know entry level motors (cost efficient/cheap) for these other brands to place in their entry level (cheap/cheaply made) cars. Hell, even the other higher end cars from GM/Ford etc… aren’t worthy of BMW’s motors. I can the new members too, “Hi, I just bought Chevy Impala with a BMW motor. What’s the cheapest performance mods? It currently has 22” spinners”....

The new look BMW engine equpped car owner. You know the type. The ones with a mullet; ya know, party in front; business in back. It will come down to our cars not being safe (stolen for parts), because every class will be in need of parts for the commonality of BMW engines etc… ;)

You know other auto makers are licking their chops at the idea.....

Crap......

The only car a BMW engine should be in is a BMW.... or McLaren... or Morgan... or Ascari... or Wiesmann... or Rolls Royce... or Bizzarrini... and of course Mini. Does Fisker count too? Granted they are all high-end car manufacturers, but it's not like this is something new to them. (Am I forgeting anyone?)

I agree though... a GM is no place for a BMW engine.

(Lotus is supposed to start using BMW engines too aren't they?)
