It should look kind of the same except instead of all the numbers lighting up, only the number of the gear your in should light up. Or at least show it up on the dash. I'm not saying I can't drive standard (that's the only cars I have owned) but sometimes I forget what gear I am in when buzzing around the city.

that's a pretty good idea, but more of a gimmick than anything imo......I would think that you would just know which gear you were in depending on certain factors such as speed.....I dunno, as you say standard cars are the only kind that you've owned then I would presume that you're much more experienced in driving standard than me, but "forgetting which gear I'm in" has never been an issue for me

I guess I see both sides of this. I can understand what Fwu means how you just don't really forget what gear you are in (especially when you can look at your tach and speedo and figure it out). But then again, there have been random times when I'm driving around in NYC and I need to slow down or make a turn or something like that, and I just forget what gear I'm in....it's weird but it happens.
I think a little gauge somewhere in the dash that tells you what gear you're in would certainly be a cool feature.

I think if there was a light on in my dash that changed every time i shifted, it would drive me nuts. Can't you just look down at the shifter and see what gear you are in by where the shifter is?

I too forget what gear i am in from time to time, but i just reach down and figure it out but feeling where the shifter is located.

u city folk are easily distracted by the fine women (or men?) that are walking
abouts that there them city....

yeah when i put my shiftknob in m5 lighted one, i thought it'd be neat to have
the current gear glow red, and the other white or something like that...
it'd be a tough wiring job...microswitches of some kind at the opening of each gate
and then ah blah.....it'd be hard

adding more electronics to bimmers.. is that really the best idea? [:p] would be interesting, but manual by nature is very mechanical, and adding electronic devices to it, seems me like it would bastardize the whole machinery..

i wonder if the ambient red light was put in to aid that some what. during the day, if need be, i could look down to the boot to see what gear i might be on, where as at night, the only way to tell is by feel. with the dim light, at least i can sort of see. helpful when yer trying to downshift, but have to hunt by feel otherwise. (you should never rest your right hand on the knob afterall)

My car has very short throws, I can't "feel" it out. So on those rare times I do forget what gear I am in, I have to actually look down and check.

Also, I don't think the gear thing would be annoying. My friend's Porsche Boxster w/Tiptronic has a little digital display that tells you what gear you are in - doesn't matter if you're in full auto mode or manual shift mode. There is a bit more detail to it, but that's basically how it works. Not really annoying at all and certainly an interesting feature to give the driver and the car a more "connected" feel, at least knowing what gear the auto trans has you in.

When you are in a college-student-infested area, the quality of the women is more important than the gear you are in.
I remember one time during the warmer months, it was a nice Friday night and I was in the village. Multiple hot college chicks stsanding on the street corner, so I blasted some Michael Jackson and burned rubber when the light turned green. Yeah...I'm cool and I know it.

For those of us that have Steptronic and have it in Manual Mode, the gear number appears on the dash........ [driving2]
i thought it might get annoying, but its not too bad. not like it blinks in bold! and the numbers are different by models also. 3ers have a big digit dedicated to indicate the gear that you are in. P,R,N,D and S and when flicked over to sport then manually shifted, it'll change to corespond to the gear number that you are on.

x5's is less intrusive, and has smaller numbers. i don't think having the gear indicator is that bad at all. for those that drove automatics, remember that O/D off btn? that was more intrusive imo.

you all have interesting points. I guess it wouldn't bee too annoying. I have not had the chance to see such fancy technology haha. I would imagine it being an electrical nightmare on a manual though. Maybe not if done right. Perhaps a magnetic switch at each corner of manual's stick throw in the center console. hmmmm. That way no mechanical wear, couild last the life of the car.
