Driving better in the dark

· Two new driver assistance systems will increase safety and comfort when driving at night.

· With the thermal imaging camera of BMW Night Vision, people, animals and objects can be detected early on.

· BMW is the first premium manufacturer in Europe to use Far Infrared (FIR) technology. According to scientific studies, FIR is best suited for the detection of living beings at night.

· High-Beam Assist automatically activates and deactivates the high beam.

· More use of the high beam, no dazzling of other road users, relief for the driver, increased safety.

And it was an overwhelming failure, so bad that GM has dropped it. Yet another GM Marketing screw up:

Cadillac Losing its Night Vision

After disappointing sales, Cadillac has decided to drop its $2250 Night Vision option on DeVille models, according to Automotive News. The option was a "passive infrared" system provided by Raytheon, in which GM has had a financial interest.

Night Vision was introduced on MY 2000 DeVilles and initially had good public acceptance with 7000 sales. But by the end of the 2004 model year, sales had dropped 600 units so Cadillac pulled the plug.

This isn't necessarily curtains for the concept, however. Several European suppliers are working on "active" systems. The whole idea is to detect pedestrians or other warm bodies that provide a visible image to infrared beams.

But there are always high beams, not to mention caution when you're driving too fast for what you can see. *- Mike Davis

This is perfect for law enforcement applications. It would work wonders in law/emergency enforcement/response. I know it would be expensive initially, but in time when the price comes down I can see this making a big impact....

They shot for the 7-series customers! The youngsters still believe that we have good eyes. BTW, which part of the body will be the high-heated area??? This machine might answer my question.

Heard that the I-15 connecting Las Vegas & LA has gangs of wolves racing with the cars on the freeway or running toward on the shoulder at around 2am every morning . If the driver has this device on, it is worst than watching a horror movie! My friend said, even he wanted to pee so much, he couldn't stop the car, 'cos the wolves were so hungry and would love to torn him apart. He saw their eyes shinning w/o the device.

with a price tag of around 2k, (assuming based on other offerings by caddy and Lex on their LX470) for now i think i'll opt for the nav system over the night vision. now if money were no issue? i'll take it, just for the cool factor. but night vision won't be too high on my list of must have options.

Now that would be a freaky site to see. Infrared a pack of wolves chasing you down the road. Looks like something straight out of a movie.....

There is a huge national park right next to I-15. The nature is quite amazing. But be sure to plan for a driving trip, my friends just wanted to save a night of hotel. You know, college students have more energy than money.
