A BMW MPV sounds as inappropriate as Johnny Rotten presenting Blue Peter. That’s why company insiders are petrified by any reference to the term MPV or minivan, prefering Super-Touring or Luxury Sports Cruiser.
To boost cabin space, the 5m-long five-door is taller than a 5-series wagon and has a longer wheelbase, but a sporty look will disguise those dimensions.
Insiders refer to the car as a mix of estate and coupe, so the roofline will drop sharply after the second (and final) row of seats and the shallow glasshouse will have a funky shape.
The flared wheel-arches swallow up to 21inch wheels, and the nose is striking, with a wide, angled kidney grille, wraparound headlamps and five air vents. And here’s evidence of a sleek shape: the coefficient of drag is a claimed 0.31 – the same as a Citroen C6.
It’s an MPV for people who are in denial about selling the Z4 and having kids.
