i agree with big daddy. BMW offers a real wide range of models and types of cars. it is not like porsche where a van would be a call for the electricla chair in my books. theya just need to make sure that the van kicks ass [thumb]

Being all things to all people is not a good idea for a company like BMW IMO. Furthermore, I think it can even turn negative if not careful.

However, I also think the biggest step has already been taken in this area with the X5; I just do see it as a big step to a van being that the X5 has been established. If BMW had only manufactured high-performance cars I would question the move but in light of their development it seems more of a natural move, provided of course that performance and quality is there and other lines don’t suffer, the bad side effect I see to being all things to all people.

it is not being all things to everyone. it is furthermore offering a wide potential to a very wide but still limited circle of clients. a bmw van will outrun a GM in price for sure, most likely speed, definelty style and quality and in the end reputation. that is what the deal between different car producers is about. clients. a bmw van will find it´s customers.

Van? - I thought SUVs were suppose to replace the van. I question the market. What market would buy a van over an SUV? It seems that people pick a van because of price, right? I really don't know. IMO it's an odd step.

The X5 is a high performance SUV.

in europe suv are still very small in sales compared to vans. we are more into those vans as they are saver, more economical, more car-like. there are so many different van concepts, unbelievable. compare that to the number of real suv concepts and you get a ratio of 15:1...plus minus some maybe. vans definetly sell here.

The word minivan conjures up thoughts of Dodge Caravans and the like. I would think that this proposed "minivan" might be more of a hybrid along the lines of the Chrysler Pacifica or upcoming (?) Mercedes Benz GST. The BWM would probably be a bit more svelt than the Chrysler/MB "wagons".

a typical minivan over here is f.e. the voyager. that is biger class of them. then there are smaller ones. i never saw a smaller one in the US, but i believe, from the picture shown, that the bimmer will be a class under the voyager league.

The X5 is a high performance SUV.

Vans are still very popular and even becoming more so. The problem I have with the SUV is space. I find more usable space in the new vans, and just like the SUV, the van can vary drastically in price. The new Toyota Sienna can run from $32 for the XLE to $40 for the loaded Limited model.

I have an Expedition with a very limited 3rd row seat with poor access and very little storage capacity with the 3rd row seat in place. The new vans offer far greater flexibility, better ride, better gas mileage, and better handling. I actually think the SUV is on the way out, at least in the volume of the past. There are few deals to be had on the new, quality vans, but its becoming name your price for SUV’s.

The X5 is nice but for some there is still a space issue. I think BMW is going in the right direction and the smaller style X5 SUV and the van I think is what customers are going to want. I have been looking for a new Toyota Sienna and they sell before they hit the ground, this is a strong market now.

Maybe the BMW will kill all the bad thoughts associated with minivan, like what the Nissan Quest is trying to do. The van pictured looks more like a crossover type car, because i dont see any sliding doors (but i could easily be wrong). At least the styling is good, and I'm sure they will make it a good performer. I think it looks good. Before the x5, most SUVs were big and rugged, with poor performance, and the x5 seemed to have started the trend of SUVs focused more on street performance than off-road (like the infiniti QX45). They will probably do the same with vans.

I compleately agree with Noodle, what is BMW thinking, BMW is a brand full of wonderful, exciting performance cars, why are they begining to lean towards something that dosent need any more competitors, especially expensives ones such as BMW..
