An small article in the latest issue of Motor Trend says that there was a "gentlemen's agreement" between BMW, Mercedes and Porsche regarding the 911 market segment. Supposedly, BMW and Mercedes agreed to not build any cars to compete directly with the Porsche 911, so that Porsche could maintain the German claim to this segment, and stay financially sound.
However, BMW and Mercedes are mad as hell now that Porsche has supported the Audi division in developing the RS8. (You may recall that Porsche owns 30% of VW/Audi and is trying to increase that stake).
So Motor Trend claims that both BMW and Mercedes are planning to develop cars to compete directly with the 911 in the $100K - $150K "entry level" supercar market. For BMW, this would be the rumored Z9.
The Z8 never really filled this role, it was a great looking car, but not a serious performance/racing caliber car.
