A lot of people are talking about this and there are not a lot of details yet but aparently there was a bad accident in an upscale neighborhood. Someone said a new M3. The driver apparently lost control while speeding and hit a tree. The car exploded and they are not sure the identity or sex of the driver. I haven’t heard much else but I will be watching this one very carefully. Certainly makes one think about driving too aggressively. People are saying it was like a blast...this sounds strange to me.

There was a recent hit and run accident with fatalities. Stupid kid in an M3 vert. DUI too. Not his first either. He wrecked one M3 vert cuz he was drunk and crashed it, then the next day or so, his parents went out and bought him a new one. Now he goes and drinks and drives but this time, 2 innocent people died cuz of his dumb ass. Family is rich and paid his $1 million bail. Prolly gonna throw a ton of cash at a high powered defense attorney. Prolly not gonna get the max penalty that he deserves. Really pisses me off.

It looks like the “person” was driving 70 in a 35.

It happened in a local area that I am familiar with and I think the idea of a kid racing around is probably going to be the case. The intersection where this happened is on a wide curved road, and with no other cars involved should have never resulted in this type of a situation, even at 70 MPH. They claim to have no idea if the person was male or female and everything in the car was destroyed but I’m sure eventually they will figure it all out.

I hope there are some smart people on this jury that understand the damage this kid has done and will do again in the future.

Hopefully he'll be tried in North Orange County. The jury pool there will NOT appreciate a spoiled brat who got a new M3 right after totalling his first one in another DUI accident. And I hope that info gets let in. His attorney will argue that it's irrelevant, but I hope the DA can slip it in somehow. Least in sentencing.

I surprised no one yet said that the M3 shouldn't have exploded in the first place. A car with such a price tag should be safer then that, although I guess it's a sports car, not a bulletproof S600

Yeah, I'm surprised the car exploded. It sounds like something you see in a movie where a car just has no reason to explode, yet does and you're just like, "Yeah, okay" but it really happened !!
That kid needs to learn to stop drinking and driving, especially when two innocent people get killed.

Very good point. For starters I want to get an old 3 series or a 330i w/ M package. I know its still alot but what would keep me from doing crazy stuff like that is the payments I do and the insurance and the fact that its a BMW, thats why I would stay sober and think before I do something stupid, its kept me going to date I guess it works. Yea, but 70 MPH into a tree could explode anything I would think. All you need is gas and heat, right?

I remember something happened at work one time. I can’t even begin to explain how or why but the incident resulted in a huge boom that would have cleared a city block, accompanied by a huge fire ball. It has something to do with high heat being introduced into oil pan gasses. Usually, these gasses are cleared with a compressed substance, not sure what it is but I see it being used at work. Anyway, the gasses were not completely cleared from a hot oil pan when something was spot welded to the outside of the oil pan and you would have thought we were in a war zone with the sound of the boom.

I guess a number of things could cause an explosion under the circumstances. There are also a lot of rumors around events like this. But no question this was intense because according to the news all that is left is steel.

i suppose any car could explode given the right circumstance, and smacking into a tree pretty fast and having parts bend and rip off, then having gas spewing everywhere could very well lead to an explosion. the question is whether it happened right as s/he hit the tree, or little after. (if the person walked away, i'd imagine it happened sometime after)

then again, my opinion is shaped not really by scientific fact but all those action movies and what i think might be, so who knows.. [:p] myth busters anyone? ^^;;

Explosive vapors remain in gas tanks, oil pans, etc. even after they are empty. Argon is commonly used as a purge gas for welding because it is inert and displaces oxygen. Our stainless steel welders use it to get a good oxide free weld.

Speaking of making things go BOOM - we do some special effects automation projects for a local company. They wanted an exploding still for one scene and a six foot fireball in another scene. It takes only a small amount of gas vapors in the right concentration in an enclosed area to make BIG booms and fireballs!

Yes, that's it-Argon.

I fell for a “joke” here one day. Our shop foreman took a small plastic sandwich bag and seemed to put a small amount of welding gas in the bag. The bag looked to me like it had nothing in it and did not appear full. He set it on the ground and lit a small piece of paper under the bag. WOW...the sound and force was unbelievable. I was about 20 yards away and the force created a feeling of breathlessness and a strange very strong force.

PS-He no longer works here because he developed a habit of doing this a bit too much.

I completely agree. When I got my 318Is, I wanted to get a 328 or M3, but couldn't afford it. After seeing what comes out of adding youth, inexperience, and a fast car, I'm glad I'm broke. lol. I notice now, I take a lot less risks while driving and I don't drive as fast as I used to. Hopefully one day I'll have the funds for a M3 (hopefully M5) and skill to handle it.

BTW, this may sound harsh, but I hope that kid who killed two people gets the maximum penalty. People like that who buy their way out of responsibility really dampen my hope for humanity and socital justice. And I'd bet that he doesn't even feel remorse for his actions.

does anyone still read this thread

haha, i knew this guy, back in the day from middle school and high school, actually used to hang out with him until he became a complete douchebag. But here's the story, no exploding car (sorry to dissapoint you) but he hits the car and takes off like a little prick. He parks the car in a residential neigborhood and leaves, thinks he's gotten away. Investigators see a trail of fluids from the crash site, follow it straight to the car. The car was registered to his grandfather, so when police questioned him, he apparently with held information from the police, so he was charged too (goes to show you that just cause you have money, doesn't make you the brightest chip off the old block). the rest of teh story after that is all true withteh million dollar bail and all.

P.S. His first car was a 330ci, fully loaded, followed with complete hamman accessories (including the multi-piece 18's which cost more than my car). I only knew that a cause i was good friends with him when he had that car.

Must be a different person; there was no driving this car other than in parts on the back of a truck. There was another BMW "accident" that sounds like what you are talking about. I think this was closer to "The Lakes" area and happened after the M3 "accident."

That sounds like the story I was talking about. What happened to the kid?

Why can't a kid own a nice or fast car? I would never drink and drive and I'm usually considered to be an extremely safe driver by all my friends and parents. Of course I push my car, but only when I'm by myself, and on back roads where nobody but me and some cows would suffer.

Please don't come in an PETA me for saying that [hihi]
