BMW says it will add turbocharged models to lineup

By JENS MEINERS | Automotive News Europe

MUNICH, Germany -- BMW AG will offer turbocharged gasoline-powered engines in its main car models in the next few years.

The aim is to bridge the power gap between BMW's top-of-the-line models and its high-powered M versions, which will stay normally aspirated.

BMW's M5, to be introduced this year, has a 500-hp V10 engine. The normal 5-Series models have six- and eight-cylinder engines that produce as much as 333 hp.

The next 3 Series range will get six-cylinder engines. The next M3 will have a V8 that is much more powerful than the 343-hp six-cylinder in the current M3.

"This leaves a significant power gap that can be filled by the turbocharged engines," a BMW source says, adding that the turbo engines will be based on direct-injection gasoline-powered engines.

Some of the turbocharged models will come with automatic transmissions, increasing their appeal in the United States. The M models only come with manual transmissions. The United States was BMW's top market in 2003.

The turbocharged models will not have the extensive body and chassis modifications of the M models.

BMW has a history of making turbocharged cars. The 170-hp 2002 Turbo was introduced in 1973. In 1980, BMW introduced the 745i, a 252-hp turbocharged six-cylinder car that topped off the 7 Series lineup. Its successor was the 750i, which was powered by a 5.0-liter V-12. The turbo version of the 745i sold 16,031 units worldwide from 1980 to 1986.

I think the FI cars they are talking about are the 1/2 series cars. I saw the engine specs on bimmerforums I think, they had like from a 1.6l to a 2.4l 4 banger, the 2.4l was FI and was pushing 240hp.

I understand the 3's are getting bigger engines too, wonder if it's a bigger inline, or a normal V.. (please be a I!!)

Has to be an I6. Losing that would be like losing the kidney grills on the cars. I hear rumors of a 3.5L I6 engine next. Prolly means the 3.0L would be the base engine for the 3. Low boost 2.4l would bridge the gap although I imagine it would be awfully close in power to the 3.0L

Turbocharger is NOT a good idea for BMW. BMW believes in NA high-revving engines and are known for providing fluid power delivery throughout the rev band. Turbocharger = turbo lag and sacrifices reliability (turbos lose their effect over time). I'm not against turbochargers, but 3-series + turbo motor just does not seem right in the same sentence. Hopefully, BMW will just enlarge the current I6 motors to produce more torque and horsepower from those already-great motors (similar to what BMW did with the M3 engine...enlarged their 3.0 liter I6). A good idea would be to carry over the 3.0 liter engine for the lower-model 3-series and develop a bigger 3.5 liter I6 for the upper model. And of course, the M4 will get the 400hp M5 engine. [}:)]

The 1/2 series are the ones getting FI'ed, the 3/4 are staying inline (just read another post on e46fanatics about it). codex had it right, 3.0 and 3.5 will be the engine standards for the 3/4 series.

They are only FI'ing the new 1/2 series 4 bangers.

The high end one (2.4l, expected to be the M2 engine) pushes 240hp.

That's exactly what I was thinking, better to leave out the turbos and just make the 3.0 liters to 3.5. With BMW's engineering, I guarantee they can push out at least 50 more hp from a 3.5 liter engine.

I hope this turbo thing is just a rumor, I can't see a BMW coming stock turbo. I've read how they believe that superchargers and turbochargers are just shortcuts to power gain, which is true.

I'd tend to agree with most manufacturer's FI'ed cars(few exceptions of course), but have you played around in a good condition BMW 2002? Those little old turbo'd cars push 170+hp, and back in the day ('73+) when they were darn near caste iron steel (doh, aren't they still?) those little bimmer's were very naughty cars. My dad bought one new when I was like 1, I remember it somewhat ('rents split up, so car went with him of course!)but hadn't seen a pic till the past holidays when we visited him. I hadn't mentioned that I'd bought a BMW till we were there and I showed him a pic of mine. So I got all the 'stories' about the 2002, as I sparked his memory.. I'm inspired to see what they are all about, I mean we all know our BMW's are freaking tanks that haul A** that can nearly balance on a dime (ok a half dollar). [:)] Imagine a lighter one, smaller engine, same great handling and balance (of course!) and equal or more hp than a 2.5 or even a 3.0 inline6 makes? I can't see how they'd have the torque (Go inline!) but it's a different market for that sort of engine and car. Pro's and Con's to it, just as much as our inlines, or any other car I think.

I've been looking to put my wife in a CPO 323 or 325 wagon, but if these lil 1/2er's are coming out at the end of this year(especially the hatch), and actually make it to the US well I may have to reconsider.
