VW first, now BMW?
BMW Manager Held in Bribery Probe, Prosecutor Says July 27 (Bloomberg) -- Munich police arrested an employee of Bayerische Motoren Werke AG in an investigation by the prosecutor's office into bribery, the prosecutor's office said.
Investigators are looking into allegations that the unidentified 54-year-old manager received about $100,000 to award contracts to a supplier between 2000 and 2002, the Munich prosecutor's office said in an e-mailed statement. A 45-year-old employee of the unidentified supplier has also been arrested, the office said.
The workplace of the accused at BMW, as well as his home, were searched today by four prosecutors and 16 police officers. Both of the accused will be brought before a judge today, the prosecutor's office said.
BMW joins Volkswagen AG, Europe's biggest carmaker, and Infineon Technologies AG, the region's biggest semiconductor maker, among German companies with former employees who have become subject to prosecutors' probes involving bribery allegations within the past month. Frankfurt prosecutors searched offices of Commerzbank AG, Germany's third-biggest bank, a week ago as part of a Russian money-laundering investigation.
The BMW employee is a manager in the purchasing department and has been suspended, said Martina Hatzel, a spokeswoman at Munich-based BMW, who declined to name the individual. The carmaker is waiting for further details in the case to determine whether there are legal grounds to fire him, she added.
The supplier is based in eastern Germany, said Hatzel, who wouldn't name the company and couldn't say why the sum was denominated in dollars.
