BMW- Are repairs THAT extreme!?!?

I've never thought they are expensive to repair. Everyone asks me how I can afford to fix these things, and I can truthfully say I've never had any repair that would be any more or less expensive than any other car. Fixing older cars like mine are not a problem for me on my limited budget... as for repairs on a 3.0CSL, 850i or an M5 or something, yeah, it's not going to be cheap.

Land Rover has a higher labor rate than Mercedes Benz, parts in land rover are slightly cheaper though. Audi is the most expensive to repair at the dealer, but a lot of aftermarket parts are available.

Well, I just got back from getting an estimate to fix the shade on the moonroof. A while back as I was pulling it forward, it came off track and a little plastic piece fell down from the roof. It now tracks with the moonroof, but if I open the moonroof completely, it goes back too far into the roof, and I have to jack with it a bit to allow the moonroof to come forward again. It is fairly easy to stop the moonroof right before it goes too far, but it would be nice to be able to open the shade with the moonroof closed.

So basically it just needs to be re-seated into the track. The little plastic piece doesn't appear to be broken.

The estimate to fix this was $1200 parts and labor from my BMW dealer!

I can't believe it. There is no way I would ever pay this much. I will never go back to that dealer again. I just today joined this board, so I am going to see if anyone can recommend a solution, but I saw this thread and thought I would honor it with my first post.

Hard to help when we have no idea what model your referring to? Some of the "moonroofs" are quite complicated and difficult to repair. I was quoted over $1200.00 just for parts to repair one on my old 84 733i. I fixed it myself with new cables for less than $200.00, but it was extensive taking me over six hours.

Sorry,

I have a 2001 330i.

The actual roof works fine. It is the shade that has come off track. I can see how it would still be a pain, since it is hard to see and get access to the trouble, but I think it is just as simple as a piece that has come loose between the shade and the track.

Thanks Big Daddy,

That would probably help someone that knew what they were doing. It gets fuzzy as I zoom in so I can't see much detail. I would first need to know the list if items that are itemized and numbered. Then I would have to know how to go about disassembling the roof such that I can gain access to the sliding shade.

I am not overly confident that I could accomplish the feat. Did you scan that diagram, or did you pull it out of an electronic book? I might have more confidence if I had a detailed manual in front of me. Since I will probably be doing more work myself, I guess I need to buy myself the appropriate service manual.

I wouldn't mind paying someone a reasonable fee to fix it, but I wouldn't know where to begin looking for that person in the Dallas area.

Thanks Big Daddy,

That is much better. I can see the parts that I think I need, and they aren't that expensive. I guess the dealer was wanting to replace the entire moonroof.

Great site, thanks again.

you have to be careful with dealers - many times the will just replace an entire part instead of repairing it. Had the same problem with the headlights on my E39 - $300 for a new assembly where you could order the parts and repair it for about $10.

I dunno. Some dealers just jack you on labor. Mine had the same problem. Luckily, it was covered under warranty. It's actually a common problem.

The entire moonroof assembly was listed at $641, so I bet that's what they were quoting in the $1200 price.

I took the car in for the Window regulator and that cost me $400.

They then quoted by the riduculous price on the roof shade fix, quoted $485 to change the hoses to the power steering unit (I guess they saw some fluid leaking, although I have never seen a sign), and quoted $345 for a "low oil level sender" of which I have never seen a problem (they say that it will cause the oil level lamp to light, but it hasn't yet).

Needless to say, I am now looking for a new service center, and will never return to this one. And if it comes time to buy a new car, I will look for another BMW dealer (although I bought this car new from this dealer).
