What the hell? Who in BMW thinks it would be a good idea to switch from one of the most recognizable and identifiable slogans ever to one that is nondescript and forgettable?
I guess it reflects the ongoing shift in the priorities of the company - a shift that I don't think is a good thing.

You know that is a very very good point, the company is on Cloud 9, best sales ever, out selling Merecedes (finally), largest Premium Automaker in the world, best resale value in class, everybody loves you, and then. The Board thinks it was their doing, they were the only ones that built the company up to its current success. Funny how that always happens.
I saw this on another site and thought it might be a joke. The new slogan is not very imaginative. It could be used by any company--computer, advertising, legal, anything. It does not sound like a car company.
Maybe they just want you to sit in their cars and think rather than actually drive them now.
It is not a joke, they are serious. They have now added this correction to the article:
CORRECTION: The original version of this column incorrectly said that BMW was dropping its long-time "Ultimate Driving Machine" slogan. In fact, while the company is broadening its message with an additional theme, it has not dropped its old slogan. -- Editor
looking at the BMW standpoint, I think they just didnt want to limit themselves to " driving - car" as they have motorcycles too which "rides" and was an aero company hence "the ultimate driving machine" only limits themselves to "car". They may have future plans on future developments into new market segments! we will see about that. However, personally I still disagree with changing the ultimate slogan . They should stick with that for their car division [driving2] and create a new one for other divisions...
