According to BMW and from what I've heard dealer's say - they can't keep them in stock and they can't get them from BMW fast enough - a dealer told me they had 3 since the beginning of March and each one was on the lot for at least a half a day.
Why don't you post some numbers and/or links Mr. C&D journalist, because I've "heard" conflicting reports. There are two dealers by home in the suburbs of Chicago and they're at least five or six 645s on their lots, each, and they've been sitting their for a while now. Look at all the 645s on ebay selling at sticker price (where's the mark up that indicates excessive demand?). I remember when the 2003 E55 came out and you couldn't find one anywhere, and the few that were out there (in the paper, on ebay, or occassionally at a dealer), you had to pay a 10-15K mark-up!! And then when the 2004s came out with the GPS, it was the same way all over again. No such thing with the new 645Cis. A week after they came out they were all over the internet; two Neiman Marcus editions were selling on ebay-- cheap too, if you ask me.
When I was at the dealer a few weeks ago getting my iginition coils replaced, there was one in the showroom. I sat in it and a sales associate came over asked what I thought: I told him outright that the exterior design is bearable but the interior was TOO sporty and not luxurious enough for my taste (it had the burgundy leather with titanium trim--what? In a $77,000 BMW?!?!). He told me BMW was aiming for a more sporting, driver's car. I told him they could keep it. I want a car than handles well AND looks distinguished, not racy. I'd much rather get a CLK55 or better yet, a CL500, since I think it's a more fair comparison; both full size coupes. Sure the CL is costlier, but at least I know I'll get a beautiful looking interior, with generously wood-trimmed dash and doors and leather-stitched console, and not some dinky, not to mention, drab looking interior with crappy door sills and a funky dash (ooh, optional wood). Damn, these new interiors, suck! [???1]
I can only pray that BMW will come to its senses shortly and re-hire Henrik Fisker (now Aston Martin's design director), perhaps one of the greatest automotive visionaries ever, long-time BMW designer, and predecessor to that Fiat reject, Chris Bangle.
