theres an article in Road and Track about it...let me copy it down
BMW has issued the first pictures of its new baby, the 1 Series, which will go on sale in Europe this fall. Currently, BMW North Americfa is weighing whether to sell he car in the U.S. On the one hand, it is seen as an extension to the range and an additional source of prophet; on the other, there are arguments that importing a small Ford Focus-size car will harm BMW's image; there are currency issues as well.
At 166.5 in. overall, the 1 series is about 2.5 in. longer than a 5-door Focus, which places hte newcomer right in the middle of Europe's most fiercely contested market segment. Not that BMW sees the new car giong head-to-head with the mass-market leaders. The 1 is being sold as an upmarket small car, aimed at what the British call the "Executive" market. Front drive is universal in the segment, and BMW is counting on it traditional rear-drive leayout to thelp the new car live up to the "Ultimate Driving Machine" tag.
Power comes form a selectino of a 4-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines. It is indicative of how the Eureopan car market is developing that the most powerful and fastest of the four options available from launch will be a 163-bhp turo-diesel that gives a top speed of 137 MPH and a 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) time of 7.9 seconds. All this comes with a fuel consuption figure of 41.3 mpg

i guess it wasn't what i said and that it was about BMW's image...i kind of feel the same way that it would hurt BMW's image as a luxury car company...i mean the price is probably significantly cheaper taking the alure of owning a BMW, a company which sells primarily to the upper classes...
