Gentleman,

I know you all have some kind of opinion on this topic. My reason for asking is that I am looking for one of these beauties and need some advice from smarter, more experienced and probably better looking people than myself! Primarily I'm interested in mechanical dependibility at 5 and later years of age. Do the rods drop often out of a 96 or does the transmission seals blow frequently in a 98, etc.? If you have a chance, any advice would be much appreciated and well received!

Welcome to the forum! The E38 7-series is a great-looking car. My favorite one is the 2001+ models with the Sport Package...that was a great-looking 7. I think the entire E38 generation is pretty reliable. I am not familiar with any issues associated with the 96 and 98 model years of the 7, but the 99 and later models are quite problem-free. My roommate's mother has a 2000 740iL with around 80,000 miles on it and it still has many years to go.
