Well, it's got a little roundel on the nose just like my car and since I think it's a winning answer, I'm stickign by it. [:D] I'll just think of McLaren as a supplier or contractor for BMW and that it's a BMW since it's writing the check. Hehehe.

I'd say any of the M3's. In terms of tossability and road grip with a stock suspension, arguably the E30 318is or the M3. Could be completely true becuase of the light weight of those two, and that the E30's were still being built without much comfort in mind. I talked to someone on bf.c who owns an E30 318is and an E46 M3 (back when I was looking for an E30 and possibly considering a 318is), and he said the E30 is much more tossable, but in terms of trackability the E46 takes it hands down (probably becuase of power).

But the best answer will come from someone like big daddy or etc. who have probably driven a good number of different bmw's.

No way. E46 M3 turns in better numbers than the E36 and E30 M3's. The best-handling BMW you can get right now (that is currently still being produced) is easily the M3 Competition Package. If you want to talk globally, I'll give the nod to the M3 CSL.

Yes of course it turns in better numbers, its also quite a bit more powerful. We're talking strictly handling. We'll wait to see what someone who's driven the cars says... the M3 competition package is still heavier and more luxury oriented then the e30's. I'm definitely not saying the M3 doesn't have good handing [hihi] But I would like to hear what some people have to say about the two cars stock vs. stock.

if its a street legal car it has to be a new 5 with ars suspension and and active steering the car has no roll and can turn a full circle with half a turn of the wheel

Doesn't mean it can handle better. I don't think a new 5 series could, by the law of physics, handle nearly as well as an M3.

I think the new 5 cannot play here. Virtually all the reviews of active steering are critical of how it responds under aggressive driving. Several reviewers have reported that they have "gotten ahead" of active steering in aggressive turns and they could feel it trying to "catch up' or compensate. While it wasn't dangerous, it was annoying and unexpected.

Grr, it's so stupid they break that solid link between the steering wheel and the tires... I can just imagine what happens if the system fails and you're in the middle of nowhere.... you know what happens? BMW assist keeps that customer for another year!

That's what I'm saying. An E46 M3 will out-handle an E30 M3. The E46 M3 is heavier, but benefits from technology. BMW does not work backwards.
But again, they did start building more luxury oriented cars. Luxury and sport don't mix, they have to be balanced (as we discussed on AIM [hihi]) We'll wait till someone who's owned both posts [hihi]

I'm not saying the e30 m3 would be better, and wouldn't be surprised if the e46 was better... but I'd like to hear from someone who's driven both.

I cannot talk on behalf of the M3, But I can tell you that my old 530i handled like nobody's business. I could hit offramps with a signifigant curve at 85mph and not feel any roll or slip. I could hit twisties and curves at 130mph that I would not attempt in my Mercedes at 70mph. It was almost scarey, it was really hard to tell where the threshold of danger actually was. Got to think that the 5er has a wider and longer wheel base and I believe it is a bit heavier than its 3 series counterpart. I do truly miss the performance aspect of that car.
