Just got the new AutoWeek in the mail. A columnist thinks Bangle's remake of the 7 series inspired MANY of the current redesigns - Audi, Cadillac, Chrysler, etc.
"Maybe Chris Bangle was right. Bangle, the brilliant and controversial head of BMW design, changed course abruptly in 2002. Starting with the 7 Series, he substituted slashing, angular body lines, angry countenances on front ends and—what really drove the faithful berserk—blocky, jutting rear ends for what had been a long evolution of classically proportioned, beautifully sleek shapes.
....
Bangle has stirred up more buzz than a drunken beekeeper. And maybe something else previously unthinkable: the start of a new design era. Look around you on the road and in the pages of this magazine. Company after company is producing bolder designs—in-your-face, love-it-or-leave-it stuff. Automotive designers are no different from their brethren toiling in the clothing, home-goods or electronics industry. Like a pack of surfers, they all sense a big wave coming at the same time and scramble to ride it to shore first."
