I never drove my car lightly over my first 109,500 miles. Now my automatic is slipping out of 5th gear and into 4th when the car is up past 73 mph or on steep inclines or declines.

BMW says I need to replace the tramission valve housing...at the tune of $2,250. Ouch. My independent guy (former BMW mechanic) says he's replaced some of those, but the chance of success is limited and he's recommending getting a refuburshed tramsission from ZF for $3,500 installed, unless the intermediary step of doing just the valve housing comes with a refund towards an entirely refurbished unit. A brand new one would be something like $5,000 installed.

This is on a 3 series, but has anybody else had this repair on any of their automatics? I'm first month of E46 production, any E36 or 5-series owners out there? Some feed back would be much appreciated. What is the valve housing which is only part of the transmission? Should I just live with a little slip from 5 to 4 until the thing really goes? What do you guys think?

I know this is a stupid question, but asking the obvious - did any of them check the fluid level, top it off, or change it? This will happen on auto trannys if the fluid level is low. My old 83 GMC had a seal leak, it did exactly this when fluid was a pint or more low.

I asked the same question. Yeah, all fluid levels are good to go.

Sell it... I wouldn't advise benchwork on the tranny, and I have a story to tell when it comes to refurbished trannys. Unless it's in excellent condition and you love the car, meaning you're willing to shell out $5k on a New tranny.
