It's fair to say the engineers responsible for the new $78,000, 418-hp Audi RS4 have put their reputations on the line. This is The One, the car that will rocket Audi to the summit of Performance Sedan Mountain, an icon in the making, the long-awaited slayer of legendary BMW M3s and, on top of it all, just about the best car Audi has ever built.

The RS4 sits an inch lower than a standard A4 and the suspension, hood and front fenders are aluminum. The substitution of ultra-light RS buckets keeps weight down to 3850 pounds. The engine develops an M3-withering 418 hp at 7800 rpm and cracks 100 hp per liter. It delivers 90 percent of its 317 lb-ft (at 5500 rpm) of torque peak between 2250 and 7600 rpm. The rev limiter is set at a barely believable 8250 rpm. And if you think the 4.5 seconds Audi claims for the 0-to-60-mph sprint is impressive, 0 to 124 mph in 16.6 seconds turns the M3 into a distant spectator.

I like the way they're compairing an newly designed $80000 v8 (I assume V8) to a 333hp I6 that is at the end of it's production run... Sweet car though! [headbang]

Yep, I can bet that the new m3 is going to be an audi RS4 killer anyway, but at 78,000 thats M5 pricing, the m3 is a 52,000 car... This makes me wonder how the new M3 will be like and wonder what will it cost..

Very nice car...however, it looks really familiar to some BMW, oh wait, the M3!

It feels good to have a car that almost every company in the high-end sports car market attempts to copy.

Love the performance, but IMO to bad it's ugly has hell. I don't mind the rear end THAT much, but the front with its man-eating grill looks like shit...

They can compare their 4.2 liter V8 to the tried and true six year old I6 all they want (what a joke). My only question is what took them so long. They have to remember it's the end of the line for the current M3 and short of guaranteeing the new M3 (when and if it come out with a V8) will probably dominate like usual. Who knows until BMW gives some sort of a real hint of which way they are going to go? You know BMW will not stand letting Audi dominate the market and come out with an awe-inspiring product to once again be king of the hill.

Who ever wrote that article needs to get real and compare it to a car in it's price/displacement/weight class. Comparing the new V8 Audi to the current M3 is ridiculous. I love Audi's, but I am not impressed with the new looks. I love the build quality and the overall refinements of their cars, but the styling is going out the window IMO....

Not I. That's a rediculous comparsion as well... Comparing HP numbers is one thing.

That would be like comparing an M3 to an M5. Audi would be better off comparing that car (price and HP numbers) to an M5....

True - and that RS4's weight and power is more along the lines of the m5 than the m3.

I just don't like that Edsel horse collar grille. Ruins all the new Audis for me. I agree with the comments above regarding M3 comparisons. Audi knows they have a 12 month or so marketing window to capitalize upon. After that, the E90 ///M3 will give them headaches.

I can't believe that there's such a heavy emphasis on horsepower these days, seemingly at the expense of a lot of other things. I really wouldn't care if my M3 was slower than this RS4 so long as the driving experience was more memorable.

i'm not sure about your experience w/ the new a4, but don't knock it until you see it in person. i hated the front until i saw it, but now it looks great. (altho i like the a6's look better) as for the butt, the one color rear lights aren't too hot, esp if the color is red.

i love everything about the rs4's design except for one thing: the mirrors, why it has to be in silver trim is way beyond me. it so sticks out like a sore thumb, i think it ruins the whole image.

78k price tag is quite ridiculious, hopefully it'll drop back to reality before it comes out.

I have seen it up close and personal and it does not change my opinion of the front of the car. It still looks like shit to me. I am speaking only about the looks of the car and IMO it doesn't look good. This doesn't have anything to do with build/perfomance/quality of the car at all. I just plain and simple do not like the asthetics of the new Audi's (mainly the front ends)....
