Audi is readying a new A3 which will be badged the Sportback, featuring an estate-like design and loads of space.

The new A3 Sportback will be launched at the 2004 Paris Motor Show with European sales starting shortly after that. An 'Allroad' version of the Sportback is also on the cards but will probably only go on sale towards the end of 2005.

Like the A3 three-door, the new five-door model will have a conservative design. However the Sportback will get the new corporate grille, which will eventually feature on all Audis.

Insiders say that the car will also be quite a practical number with a versatile interior. It will have a clever seat folding arrangement.

As well as better practicality, the A3 Sportback should win buyers over from the BMW 1-series by offering a sportier range of engines, that is until BMW get around to fitting the 1-series with the six-cylinder units.

I think Audi needs to lose the black plastic bumpers(Allroad, this thing). Its barely acceptable on a $15,000 Honda Element, but on a $45,000 European sports wagon...?
