The local car magazines here are saying that the next model of Audi A4's are going RWD in order to be able to compete more closely with the 3-series.

Have any of you American readers seen anything similar?

I haven't read that, but I'm not so sure if I believe that. Audi competes with the rear drivers by using their Quattro AWD as an "advantage." To Audi, AWD is better than RWD.

I haven't read this either but it would be nice if they offered RWD on their 2WD cars.

MrElussive, i remember seeing a topgear vid where they compared an A4 AWD to a 3 Series RWD and an Alfa Romeo FWD, and both the Alfa 156 and the Audi were very very understeery. Not to say AWD is a bad thing at all, but for the real driving enthusiast, if they want to compete with Bimmers in terms of drivetrain layout, its a better option for them to go RWD.

Hahaha, yeah right. The A4 is a very fancy Golf/Jetta. It makes great business sense to keep it that way. From the pics I've seen, the exterior design blurs the lines even more. Highly doubt the drivetrain is gonna change so dramatically if everything else seems to be getting more common with each other. By slapping their vaunted AWD system on a Jetta, Audi has the tech necessary to market itself against BMW for little cost. A RWD is just not gonna happen on the A4 unless there's wholesale changes to VW as well.
