Good article... http://www.speedtv.com/articles/auto/formulaone/17688/

I kept saying this during the race - that the FIA seems to forget that the race is still a spectator sport.

"The USGP is virtually unknown to most Americans, and that’s not necessarily the Speedway’s fault. Unless one actively seeks it out, Formula 1 is not readily available in the States. That has nothing to do with IMS. That has to do with a sanctioning body that treats the paying customer as a necessary nuisance. American race fans don’t take well to that attitude, especially when it comes from elsewhere."
That's EXACTLY what the problem is.

(nobody ever visits the racing category - move the thread if you want though)

Nope, I'm being a good 'ol southern boy right now, watching NASCAR. I also saw the end of 24 hours of Lemans - the US team pulled off a major win!

I saw a bit of the day and night part of the Le mans, I always watch the WRC, and Dakar rallies. Nascar is boring.. and I was looking forward to seeing the grand prix of America at indianapolis, but when I turned on the tv I saw 5 or 6 cars.. and the rest were just out..

Don't forget that Michelin are also to blame.
Oh i know - but the way I get back at them is by not buying their product [;)]

FIA had the ability to bend the rules so the spectators had something to watch. Not michelin.

Apparently Michelin warned all 22 competitors that the tires were not Indy track worthy....Just what my German F1 freak Father In-Law told me. Apparently Ferrari listened.

The Bridgestones always were track-worthy; that's why the Bridgestone-shod teams raced...

Michelin warned their own teams that they couldn't guarantee the safety of their tyres. Michelin supply 7 of the F1 teams, Bridgestone 3 (there's 20 competitors).

this really pisses me off. First the F1 changes the rules to eff ferrari over per other bitching, moaning, and whining teams. now michelin messes up, and again they beg for multiple rule changes.

oh boo hoo, ferrari dominated before your petty rule change, and now that rule change bit you in the ass, suck it up and build a car that can finish a race

Nascar is boring..
Hehe, NASCAR can field a full starting grid and finish with 30+ cars, better than F1 can do these days. So if NASCAR is boring, what do you call an F1 race that fielded SIX cars?

I call this weekend's F1 race a cure for insominia!

Seriously though, that's why I don't watch F1 anymore. Say what you want about NASCAR, but the politics, crap, and in fighting in NASCAR are nothing compared to what is happening in F1.

LoL! oh yeah going around in an oval is soo entertaining. Nothing is more famous than the F1 Grand Prix races. This weekend was a fluke, nothing like this has ever happened. Soo Kirby from your telling me is that you watch nascar because there are a lot of cars racing in it?

Name 5 reasons why nascar is better than F1 racing

I do believe that F1 drivers and the whole F1 circuit makes tons more money than NASCAR (I would probably watch NACAR if it was on in Germany) Hell look at Schumi....second highest paid athlete last year.

6 F1 cars is still more exciting than watching the Capitol Beltway traffic for 500 miles.

It IS the result of all the fighting and politics, and fortunately this will probably cause the split to happen.

When you talk about 'the split' are you referring to the GPWC grouping of the manufacturers? Because if this does happen it will utterly ruin F1. Look at CART and IRL. The CART series was one of the best open-wheeled competitions in the world but thanks to the stupidity of a split it has become a shadow of what it once was.

No, a split is in nobody's interests. The fans won't know what to follow and the sport will suffer as a result. What needs to happen is to seriously change the regulations governing F1. Max Mosely is often criticised as being too bureaucratic and business-minded but he really does know his motorsport and if only the manufacturers and teams listened to him a little more then a lot of the political infighting we see today would become obsolete.

Look at this FIA proposal to see exactly what I mean about rule change proposals. They're absolutely mouthwatering. I do hope they become law for F1.

No, I don't watch NASCAR because there are a lot of cars, just more than SIX!

[scratch]Where did I say that NASCAR is better than F1? I don't see in any of my posts?? [scratch]

However, if your question is give me 5 reasons why I watch NASCAR over F1:
1. It's entertaining.
2. There is good competition in oval track racing. If all you see are cars going in circles, then you don't understand oval track racing. I have crewed with a dirt track team, and have experienced it from inside the pits.
3. The driver personalities are much more diversified and in general much less arrogant.
4. The drivers and teams are accessible by the general public. When did Michael S. (or any of the other F1 drivers) come to the United States and spend hours meeting fans and signing autographs? NASCAR drivers do this every week, all the time.
5. The races themselves are much more accessible, in location, quantity and costs.

NASCAR and F1 are very different. Arguing that one is better than the other is like arguing over soccer vs. football.

I'm with Kirby on this. I love NASCAR and I love F1. They all have their faults. I haven't watched much NASCAR since my beloved Dale died, but I do love the sport. I do love F1 more, but they both are great sports....

To each his own and then some....
