My nephew has a 98 Discovery. He said that prior to 98 Land Rover had numerous mechanical problems and even some of the newer ones have oill leaks at the valve covers (just requires new gaskets). Overall he said that he is very happy with his.

My buddy just sold his Discovery. He had a few problems, but they were covered under warranty. After warranty, parts are expensive. Parts can also take a long time to get, but if you drive a BMW this is nothing new. He loved the off road capabilities (he's a hunter, makes a couple trips a year to Alaska, Montana, etc.).

I'm thinking buying a new Land Rover... anyone own one of these? pro's/cons?

Thanks in advance for any help.[thumb]
Don't get one, they are ridiculously unreliable. The only reliable Land Rover is the New Range Rover, only because it was made by BMW. Older Range Rover's and Discovery's ALWAYS give you problems. Land Rover is known for being unreliable...fortunately, most of the times, the problems are stupid little things that can be fixed, but they can also easily be major.
The only Land Rover worth buying right now, is the New Range Rover. Ford is redesigning the Discovery and when that comes out, it should be pretty reliable, too.

My brother got a new Land Rover Range Rover at the beginning of the year. He loves it. It's a total BMW...including engine, onboard computer, navigation, and a lot of nobs :). The variable height shocks are cool and purposeful. It's gotten extremely good reviews...top of the class. I don't think you can beat it...unless BMW comes out with an X7 after the deal to provide Ford with engines ends (they extended it recently until the new Jaguar egnine is ready). The only problem is it's $70,000+. Ouch.

I think it was the Road and Track (maybe Motor Trend) review that speculated about rumors that Ford is paying BMW for each engine more than it costs to build a Mustang.

co-worker had one last year but sold it .... it was a brand new land-rover, had some major probs with engine and it ended up in the shop for 3 months because the guys couldn't fix it. even though it was under warrenty, the dealers said they couldn't cover it or something. co-worker immediately sold it and doesn't ever plan to buy one again.

With so many really fine SUV's out there, I can't help but think anyone buying a Rover is doing so for the name value. It is a statusy vehicle, but the reliability is so poor and their are so many excellent competitors it seems like a no brainer to stay away . My .02

actually since Ford bought land rover from BMW quality has gone up like 5 fold, if you buy one from 01 or 02 on you should have near the same quality as any other Ford product, which is pretty high.

BMW designed the new Range Rover and right before it was going to be released to the market, BMW turned production over to Ford because the numbers didn't quite match up (as you know, BMW isn't always financially stable). Anyways, Ford produces the New Range Rover now and what everybody is afraid of is that Ford may change the Range Rover to be based off of their Expedition/Navigator platform along with other parts/materials in order to cut costs. The New Range Rover is underpowered, anyways...4.4 liter 282hp V8 doesn't cut it for a 5,400lbs SUV. It needs a 5.0+ liter V8 with over 300 horses and massive torque.

The new Range Rover is the last BMW designed vehicle. Dont know about who is producing it. But I agree with Mr E. It needs a better powerp plant for such a heavy thing. 282hp is certainly not much.

I'm surprised I overlooked this thread....

...we had a '94 Discovery for a couple years, my brother ended up trading it in for a new Altima. Fine SUV, but... eh... after 4 years or so the maintenance gets to you.
