I was driving southbound, the CHP officer was driving northbound. He flipped a U across the median. The radar gun while he was going northbound was at 86mph. But after he fliped the U i was going 65 mph. Can I contest this or what?

Hmm, not too sure about that one. You would have to write a letter and make up some bullshit about the cop nailing you on a curve (since radar won't go around corners). Other than that, all i can say is that whenever i get a parking ticket - I haven't had a speeding fine...yet - i just write an endless amount of letters to the council until they give up. They will usually send a court order and then i write back saying "see you there" then, more often than not, they'll drop it because they can't be screwed going through with it.

So, i would say give it a really good go and see what happens. You can't end up any worse off. But 86mph IS pretty quick! [hihi]

BTW. How does the Audi go? I've never been in the 3.0L version. And is the six speed the DSG gearbox?

Good luck.

You can asked for his permit and calibration papers to start with. Most are out of date and even some officers aren't even legally using their radar guns. I've won 3 speeding tickets that way. Good thing too. 117 in a 65.

The DSG gearbox is only available -actually standard- on the Audi TT Quattro 250hp (Coupe or Roadster). The 6-speed manual from VW/Audi is a really amazing manual transmission though. First used on the Audi TT Coupe/Roadster 225hp (with the 6-speed manual & Quattro) and now VW and Audi use it on quite a few of their cars.

It'll be tough. Didn't I write you some long ass PM about the tricky tactics CHP is using now?

Anyways, it's tough b/c radar can work while the officer is moving. If you're facing the other way, they can still pick up your speed.

If there's no curve, then your only non-technical argument is gonna be that the cop radared someone else. Were there any other cars near you? Bigger SUV? Something like that. Danger is gonna be that he'll claim he "visually estimated" your speed as well.

Technical arguments (have to ask for this stuff now, well before your court date):
1) Radar - ask for his training recs, certification, and the calibration of the gun. The other stuff might be a little old, but the calibration of the gun should be the day of the ticket. Also get the road survey which states what the safe speed of the road is. I think the road survey has to be done within the past 7 years or so.

2) Visually estimating (if he doesn't bring this up, don't mention it) - ask for his training records and certification on this. If it's old, you can argue that there's no evidence he's still qualified cuz he may have lost his touch (same argument you make about the radar if it wasn't calibrated on the day of the ticket).

Call the court and figure out where you need to go to make a discovery request. Also, ask for the back of the ticket. They'll make a copy. That's where cops write their notes on the traffic stop so you'll know what reminders he put for himself.

Unfortunately, since it's CHP, he will show up.

Well, in most of America (all but like 2 states or something like that), radar detectors are LEGAL. You just buy it off the internet or store or whatever. The Valentine 1 is from the manufacturer directly or else eBay/secondhand.

Radar jammers are illegal here, but they're useless anyways (don't work). Laser jammers/shifters work and you can still buy them easily even though I believe they're illegal in a lot more places.
