A nice M5 to be sure, but it would be a bad car for a daily driver. Just think how bad you would feel looking at her covered in salt and road grime.

I have seen better, however. I almost bought a similar M5 last year with 74k miles. It was perfect.

In the past few years I have seen two very low mileage M5s up for sale. One was a turbocharged monster with 450 hp. at low boost and 30k miles. The other was stock with 30k miles.

They are rare, but out there. Not a purchase to rush into. The M5-specific interior trim costs thousands of dollars to replace. The front seats are like $4k alone. The engine is also very costly.

I think the best M5 for the budget minded enthusiast is a well cared for but not perfect car with all mechanical issues sorted and around 120-140k miles, for say $8-10k.

That is a beautiful machine for sure, but I'd rather have an E34 M5. Not that I wouldn't take an E28, but I like how the E34 looks more. I don't like the huge USA spec bumpers. The ones on the E28 are huge!

i can agree with Mike too, i just think that the E28 M5, especially that one is a gorgeous piece of machinery. sure the new M5 is better looking, performing, and all that jazz, but every now and then you have to look back to the roots.

At any given time there are approximately 20-30 E34 M5s for sale, most on autotrader, a few on ebay, a few in other places such as the BMW CCA classifieds.

There are usually about 10-15 E28 M5s for sale in the same combined sources.

Total world production of the E34 was around 2300 IIRC, US production of the E28 was around 1200, with most people saying 1220 or so. (Don't believe 500, that was the original plan, but they brought more in and people sued BMW because of the ad campaign that mentioned 500 examples. Those folks got fat rebate checks for a new BMW.)

For those that like the E28 body style, but not the US bumpers, there are a few of the european, small-bumper E28 M5s in the country, about 3-5 maximum, that were gray-market imported in the 80s. A bumper conversion is possible, but extremely expensive.

I always wanted an E28 M5. It is what started my love of BMW, before they even existed. (I learned of the M635csi in 1984 and thought that engine would be great in the 5er, all at the tender age of 8).

I am hoping to pick one up as a third car in a year or two, if all goes well, but a boat and an apartment in Amsterdam may come first.

I prefer the dynamic qualities of the E34 M5. I have driven several examples of both, and the E34 is much more advanced and faster to boot. However, the E28 is just a classic and that alone may earn it a spot in my stable. Too bad I only have a 2-car garage. Tough life, I know.

I'm with Mike; that red M6 is THE car to own. If I ever have a third garage and an extra 15 or 20 large hanging around, I'll get my butt back into a 6 series, preferrably an M6. [thumb]

EDIT: Still, that black M5 is awesome looking. [:D]

Those are extra belts, for what part of the engine/accessories I don't know, guessing the fan or water pump/alternator, and the compartment holds the battery.

Yes, usually they are stained and dirty, although I am sure there are a lot of nice ones given how much people love those old M5s, and rightly so.

I don't have those things yet, but in a few years I may. I have a similarly minded friend who may go 50/50 on one or both. The boat would just be a 19' runabout, say 5 years old and $10k. The apartment would be an occasional vacation home and rental the rest of the year to pay the mortgage and management fees. Say $150k mortgage, 20% down, $1000/month in carrying costs. The boat is probably more realistic, but who knows. I do plan to be overseas at least a few times a year. In fact, I'll be in Holland at the beginning of March. [rofl]

Don't confuse being wealthy with having a relatively high monthly income and a willingness to go deep into debt. [;)] Not having a wife or kids is also key. We'll see if I can maintain if/when I 'settle down'.
