I was looking in the paper/ebay and my son wants to purchase a 530i bmw. He has a job, and says he will make the payments if he gets one. Is it a bad idea to go with a older bmw like a 94/95 530i? Say that it has 110k miles on it.

is there another bmw that he might like/better suited for him. I tried getting him to get a smaller car, like a honda, but he is dead-set on a bimmer.

should I allow him to get an older bmw? like a 94/95 530i?

an older 530i would definitely be a better choice than a newer honda.......for one thing, bimmers are solid cars, if you're worried about safety then don't even touch a honda with a 10-foot pole

That 5 series is an excellent car, and as long as it has been looked after, the miles won't matter (that's pretty standard for a car that age).

However, if you'd prefer him in a smaller car, you could always compromise and suggest a 3 series? Depends why you want him in a smaller car, ie. to lower the price, to lower running costs, for convenience or to restrict the power. If he's a new driver, a lighter and smaller 3 series might suit his needs a bit better? Does he need the space of a 5 series. And as for the performance and handling of the 3...it's still a Bimmer!

If you like this idea, check out the E36 forum and I'm sure you'd get heaps of recomendations regarding which years/models were preferable.

Good luck.

ps. He'll be a lot better off in a BMW than a Honda (in many ways)

I looked at buying a 740 once and that is when I learned about it. Wound up with a 750 instead. Most dealers are honest about it when you ask, but I found most private parties and car lots acted like they had no knowledge about it. Check the Autotrader and eBay, 94-95 models affected by Nikasil are usually selling below book.
