5 Series scores poorly in crash tests?

BMW’s new 5-series range has run into trouble in the crucial Euro NCAP crash tests. According to an inside source, the initial tests would have led to the car being given a low three-star rating. The source claimed that the car’s problem was ‘structural’ rather than a series of minor problems.

BMW denied this but admitted that the 5-series has been crash-tested. However, BMW has ‘agreed’ with Euro NCAP that the tests were hampered by ‘inconsistencies’. The impact tests are likely to be re-run in the near future.

‘We genuinely hope for, and expect, a five-star rating,’ a BMW spokesman told Autocar.

If there is is a structural problem...then I wonder how that recall is going to be handled. Lots and Lots of Bangle 5's out on the road.

This is not good news and could devastate BMW, IMO.

Having a 3 star car in the year 2004 in the $50,000 price range tells me there are some serious design and operational problems within the company; this should never happen.

Speaking of Crash tests, what's amazing is what the Z4 gets for its size, I've seen pictures of crashes of the Z4, it barely moves the engine its built so good.

What's also amazing is what the last gen F150 truck got. A Mini's structure survived far better than that huge truck.
Lol, yeah I know exactly what you mean. IIHS gave the previous F-150 body an overall score of "Poor". I think that's pretty crazy considering the F-150 is the #1 selling pickup in the US (and has been for years) and is one of the top-selling vehicles -in general- in the US.

Hell the German Smart cars got a 4+ star rating and that car is 3 1/2 feet long. 2 seats a windshield and 4 wheels.
Those things crack me up. You probably see them on the road in DLand. They are so short! In Italy I saw several that they backed into the curb to park, instead of parallel parking.

I don't need crash tests to tell me the new 5er is all wrong. I just hope they're not busy remaking everything they know about the 3.

Just got back from a road trip to NYC. Going on six years next month...122,500 miles. Gotta flush the radiator again, and change the oil this weekend. I need a new one under warranty! Please please please please please BMW, get back to some purposeful design.

are we talking about the new 5 series? i do hope they get a low rating....
forcing ppl to buy other cars, dropping sales, forcing bmw to fire bangle
and finally bring back the gogrgeous e39! yay!

yeah that won't happen though.... bmw will just pay off the right ppl
before the next round of tests =\

Ahem! http://www.iihs.org/vehicle_ratings/ce/html/0409.htm
I don't like that one "Average" they received (BMW always gets FLAWLESS ratings down the line) but it still got the highest rating of "Good" overall and a "best pick" award.
Also, the new 5 has officially grown on me. It is a good-looking car once you get used to this new BMW look. Look at it carefully and you'll see it is sportier and nicer than you initially realized....

The look has grown on me too. A buddy of a buddy of mine (I know him pretty well too) just purchased a 645i. Very nice car. He traded in his X5 4.4 for it. I am going to see if he will let me test drive his car....
